Just a note to fellow reefers;
I've got good, rapid coral growth in my new tank, so I became concerned about magnesium levels (I tested for everything else, and it was fine).
Concerned that I should supplement mag, I ordered magnesium from Bulk Reef Supply along with a test kit off Amazon (Salifert).
Should have bought the kit first and held off on the mag powder.
Tank water tested at 1470+. I supplemented with Kent mag a few weeks ago, in small amounts, but this is pretty high.
Tested twice, same results. Then I tested the salt water I use for changes, Instant Ocean Reef Crystals. Tested at around 1470 - 1500. I tested twice.
It's been two weeks since I did a water change. I usually do large changes, 50 gallons or so on a 90 display with a 75 gal. sump. It appears I'll never have to supplement magnesium as long as I use Reef Crystals.
I believe one reason the mag stays high is there is NO coralline algae in this display. And while the corals are growing well, none are what I'd call large.
