test kits

I am going to puchase some test kits but I have a few questions

1. are salifert kits really the best? I have been browsing his forum on RC and it seems like his tests are complicated, non user friendly, and having frequent batch related problems

can anyone confirm or deny that?

2. also, IM not trying to suggest conspiracy or anything, but are the salifert kits genuinely superior to others or are they so recommended everytime someone asks about kits because we'd like to support a fellow RC user and forum sponsor?

anyways, Im looking to purchase some kits pretty soon and would just like some guidance before I buy them

for now Im planning on buying calcium and alkalinity kits

My opinion on this is they are the most consistantly accurate. Many test kit makers use the damn color charts, which are neigh unreadable, and what do you do when you are borderline between two colors? Pretty hard to differentiate...

The other makers that also use the charts like Salifert are expensive. There are electronic testers, which of course are more to start, but would save in the long run.

As far as difficulty using them: If Howie can do it, anyone can!!!

IMO I always trust and use the Salifert kits. I have used others and found that Salifert are the most friendly to use. I cannot comment on accuracy for other kits.

CA and Alk are the most important....

I use and prefer LaMotte for Alkalinity and Nitrate. I use Salifert for Calcium, Magnesium, Ammonia, and Nitrite. I used Merck for phosphate, but might go with Hach next time instead.

there has been some issues with salivert latley the guy that runnes the company is sick i think and the test kits are going downhill. it may be a rumor but the sponsor forum for them was locked last time i checked because of no one responing. from what i here it is a small company. that is what i have and i have not had any problems with them.

Habib is back and all is well. He is a top notch guy and he will not let us down. For the next couple days though he is in France on vacation with his family.
