The St Louis World Aquarium Closed it's doors for good today!!!

YAY!!

Fox news put a nice spin on it, which was laughable, but at least it's over.

Who knows what will really happen to the animals. :sad2:

I hope they do the new one justice and build it like it should be.....lol...yeah, that....

.....for $49 million they damn well better......let's see how will that go?
....maybe $9mil will go to actually building the place and $40mil of it will be "misappropriated" to the _____ . Then there will be the request for an extra $20mil to "finish" the project......which of course will be asked for in additional taxes.

Then they will shout from the roof tops about the fabulous $70 million facility they built....so they can ask for higher ticket prices.....which of course will actually be needed to pay the new minimum wages they'll be slapped with in 2 years....

IDK, maybe they should have left it be.....

With the way they ran that place, I can't imagine anyone from either the government or the private sector entrusting them with 10's of millions of dollars to build a new facility. I suspect that we are going to be waiting a LONG time for any announcement that the current management will be involved with any new construction.

I'd love to see a real public aquarium that is professionally managed here in St Louis. With the World Aquarium now closed, perhaps the St Louis Zoo may become interested and line up the funding to build one.

I have had the fortune to know one of the principal architects for the Atlanta Aquarium, and have a SERIOUSLY behind the scenes tour. Let me tell you, the ~$40 admission is worth it. Now, I don't want anything that pricey, but I too would LOVE a solid aquarium in St. Louis!

$40 seems ridiculously cheep especially when you are housing a tank with 3 whale sharks. Can you imagine the filtration you have to have to deal with the waste from those beasts. Or the grocery bill to feed them. Let alone all the sharks, rays, and other misc. fish.

I'm going to have cake tonight. It really made my day to hear this. That place was shameful. I hope a true aquarium is opened but not if its in anyway associated with the people of the world aquarium.

Maybe two slices of cake. That place was disgusting.
Cheers
Tom

Good riddance but I worry even more about the animals now. I can't imagine lack of care getting any worse but now that the owner doesn't need to worry about pressure from the viewing public...

... those poor creatures are screwed

ok i agree it needed to go . but if that is the case the tank at the science center in the learning room looks like it needs a good tear down and repair aswell when i seen it . really disapointing . imo we bash them for not running it correctly but what about us dont members here take care of that tank

I will say we help take care of it. We also don't bash them for not running it correctly. I will also agree that it could use a tear down and repair. We actually briefed that as a solution when we took over the tank a few years ago. Long story short, the money and time just isn't there. Unfortunately we were not involved with the initial setup. As soon as we were brought in, we pointed out many problems with that tank. We have fixed most of them. They also had a crash not too long ago. The tank was looking pretty good before that. We have made some tweaks and there are new people working with the tank at the Science Center. I'm hoping that by this time next year it will be back in full swing.

The best analogy I can come up with is this:
I pay company X to maintain my tank. One day it looks a little dirty to me so I put some bleach in the water to clean it. The next day everything is dead. Does this mean company X can't maintain tanks? They are the ones that take care of it right? Not quite what happened, but somewhat similar.

Fortunately we are using their mistakes as learning tools. With each step back we take two forward.

Sorry for all the words, but I have loads of thoughts about the tanks at the Science Center. I can talk about what we are doing, what's went wrong and what we are trying to change/fix forever.

I now have all day Tuesdays and Thursdays off, if help is needed just let me know, plus it means I can wonder around all the LFS's after hahahahahahaha.

Oh boy.....You went and did it now Ryan...

...for plenty of reasons

let's just leave it at that...........

I don't mind the thread getting derailed, but let's not do so with the science center tank.
You want to discuss that then start a new thread about it please.

Never saw the one at the City Museum, never really heard good things about it and the short stories on the news made it look really lack luster and boring.... Not a problem any more though right?! For the record, I don't think Ryan did very well in grammar. He probably typed that with a mouth full of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich...

Not really sure why post 10 should be deleted. I didn't say anything wrong and just tried to explain the situation there. I even agreed with Ryan about how the tank would ideally be completely redone. And if we can't derail threads in the S.L.A.S.H. forums here on RC, then Smack is going to have to delete his account

Why on earth should a brand new tank need to be totally redone?

You were the one in charge of it's build were you not?

Like I said....it would be best to let it go.

Ahh, that one. I assumed the one in the learning room was the one we were talking about. Yes, the new one has had some issuesand I was in charge of the build, but the same theory of help applies. We had a pretty large bloom of phyto and the water looked murky. I'm not sure why that one should be completely redone either. I consider it to be pretty solid. Other than some normal new tank issues and the phyto snafu, I'm not sure what the problem with the tank is. I do welcome constructive criticism tho. If there are obvious problems or things that should be done I offer it is not best to let it go, but rather share the information and help the Discovery Room's tank be the best it can be.
