Thanks for the help but...

Travis, you are not a target, but look how you reacted to my post. Now think what Ryan must have thought about yours? One of the first things he would have seen was that quote. What does that say to him?

You could have just said, hey you dont have time to help or be involved in the club, ok. Youre more then welcome to post here anytime you would like.

Wouldnt that have sounded much better?

Wow, this is crazy.

Good job in turning someone away from the club, outstanding!

I'm sorry, some of you may not like to hear this, but I am beyond disappointed in how this was handled. I've read all the posts, I see NOTHING that should have caused this. Ryan's post was a little out of the blue perhaps, but certainly not deserving of this.

All I read was, Ryan doesnt have the free time to help out with the club right now. HMM, ok, neither do I, do I get kicked out next?

It is then mentioned that the amount of the dues is "more than fair" and "worth every penny" That doesnt sound bad, does it.

After that, he is simply wanting to know the answers to some questions, why should I join? How do I know the club will be here in the future? Legitimate questions.

This Travis, should never have been posted, I am BEYOND disappointed in you.

Is it, why? Much better ways to word this. Perhaps try telling someone why its a good value.

I'm sorry, but this just should never have turned out like this.

One last thing, this forum is free to use by anyone, member or not. The club does not own it. Not everyone will want to join, they should still be welcomed here.

I wont keep going with this, but their are few people in this group that need to rethink the things said here today.

Allen

Allen I am a little surprised in you as you appear to be of some of this group.

While I would do anything I could to help any active member in this forum (GIRS member or not), I think some people have to see an immediate and tangible return on their financial investment. Sometimes people only want to look at the money they invest and not put value on the information, good will, comraderie, and all the other perks that come from being a part of a group like ours (again GIRS member or not). Those things I just listed are what I take from this group, along with some very good friendships and several healthy laughs.

I really think that as Ryan spends more time on here and becomes more familiar with the workings of this group he will easily see that there is a lot more good apples here then bad and that this club does a lot for the hobby in this area.

Billy,

What I want is for everyone to think a little more before they post. It just should not have exploded like this. I dont think Ryan was intending to bash the club. We all know the benefits, new people do not. Help them, explain it to them. I dont think anyone else meant to push him away either, but it came across badly.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Allen. But honestly reading Ryans first post it is easy to take it out of context and as an attack on the value of the forum. I think he could have chosen less inflammatory words and gotten a lot better response. The simple question, "What do you all see as the benefits of being a GIRS member?" likely would have spawned a very productive conversation, instead of the way it was approached.

However, we all think differently, and as someone mentioned earlier, internet conversation is often taken out of context, which is simply the result of the words we physically speak account for about 25% of what we are communicating.

I thought about exactly what I wanted to post...I was defending this club and the extrodinary value it represents.

Now I am getting slapped for that....

It is obvious that the core of this club does not see it the way I do.

I am out of here....I will stay a member but in no way will I EVER try to say anything about any issues here again.

This is unbeleivable....

Agreed 100%, thats why you really have to think it through. I do the same thing at times.

NO, NO you are not. I know you guys were defending the club, i am just saying you should tell someone why its a good value. How can anyone know that without someone telling them?

I know the original post could also have been worded better, but guys, don't attack, explain.

Sorry, just had to quote that... :D

We have all been down this road before and have all been misread before. You can shake your finger at everyone involved, but all your finger is going to do is possibly stir the pot. The members were right to defend the club and Ryan was right to post his point of view. Both parties just went about it the wrong way and have moved on. This discussion was dead and I wish it would have remained that way.

If you read my first post you will see me defining the value of the $20 membership and my comparison to feeding a small african child.

Allen this is a guy that has been around here for a long time and knew exactly what the values are but has decided that they are not good enough. Secondly HE IS NOT EVEN A MEMBER....but we have treated like one as long as I can remember....but he cant invest 20.00 to show some faith in the club...to me that is a slap in the face to everyone especially the voluntary elected officials.

WOW I am so disapointed in everyone who is coming down on Atticus and myself. Obviously in all of your eyes we are wrong....but you will never convince me of that.

I edited the post above.....I will be around...but now I will be the lurker.

I am not saying anyone is in the wrong, it could have been delt with better but it wasn't, so now we move on.

Let's call it dead and move on please.

Ein

I disagree with your interpretation of what others are saying. We all appreciate your support of this forum, our club, and this hobby.

However, the forum is here for the benefit of the hobby and the creatures that we all choose to pull from their native homes and raise in our little sess pools we call reef tanks. If people want to use the information and not be members that's fine, at least the creatures in their tanks benefit. As for the loss of comradery that comes from our get togethers, meetings, etc, that is their loss. I really hope Ryan is able to see that this is a very good hearted group and that we mean well, not only for the hobby, but also for one another.

One word of advice I have for anyone that wants to make a post anywhere on the internet, emails, or anywhere else, look at what you are typing and see how it would make you feel if you were on the receiving end of it.

Ah, you will get used to it. Everyone likes to feel the safety of having a guard dog to protect themselves and that which they hold dear, until it barks too loudly...

Ok so I'm glad we got the october arguement out of the way, let's shake hands, kick shins, yada yada yada and move on. The guy messed up, said some stuff, some people got mad, some people yelled at there computers when reading posts (don't lie everyones done it) and we've all said sorry (in different words but we all know you wanna be friends) Lets just stop before it gets as bad as it has in the past (i'll include myself in a few of those so i'll slap my own hand for that) Theres no sense in argueing anymore, the guys who defended the club are right for defending it (anyone who has time and effort in this club would do the same), the guy pretty much said what he said wasn't what he really "meant" to say....that summed up a sorry for me. As for everything else....I'm renting those super big boxing gloves and a boucing blow up ring for the next full club meeting, that should give everyone some time to figure $ h i t out. The END J

This is what you spend $20 for opurtunities to hang out with other members and have fun. Information is all over on the net I could go to another club forum and gain info. This is supposed to fun, by the way I can't believe you brought up the bamboo earlier lol that was a good time. As a current member this type of stuff really turns me off of the club. I value the club because when selling something if it is a club member I tend to give a better deal. but enough said. The other thing is if you have a problem with post or what someone said discuss it in private thats what email and pm are for. You wouldn't want your boss at work to reem you in front of the whole world.

lets move on - Set up the sumo!!!!

Thanks for the insight guys. It sucked that I had to be the instigator of a flame war to actually get the info I was seeking but, aside from the methods, the results were desirable.

Eins, I address you first and foremost because you have been the most outspoken against me.
I apologize if you took my question of value as a slight to the club. I admit, my methods could have been better, but they weren't. That's the past. What I was seeking though, you have yet to answer. You obviously think the club is a great value. Tell me why. That's all I ask. The internet is filled with information. What do YOU get out of the club that makes it such a great value to you?

To the rest of you, thanks for the support. And the explanations of why the club is worth the financial and temporal investment.

I apologize to all of you for causing the Great GIRS Debate of October 2007 (May it be remembered by Noobs and Veterans alike!). My wording definitely could have been better and my musings and ramblings sometimes find their way into my posts. It was never meant as an insult to the club.

Don't worry about it man... Everyone knew the annual explosion was comming it just needed a place to happen. Unfortunatly it was here... As you stated and also happens every time, we have gained some great insight through our bickering. As long as we all grow from this and do not dwell on it the club will actually come out stronger in the end.
