Thanks Katrina, what now????

A few months ago, a mean mean lady by the name of Katrina came and killed all of my fish, and inverts. Lucky for me she left my house alone.

My tank is still up and running, but all live is gone with the exception of a few nassirus snails, and maybe whatever life is left on my rocks.

I am in the Marine Corps, stationed here in New Orleans, have less thatn 1 1/2 yrs left in this area.

I want to add fish and inverts again, but in 5 months the hurricane season will be here again, and I am certain that we will have to evacuate atlease once, which will leave the tank to be unattended.

I need advice as to what I should do. I have been thinking about just tossing in damels for something to look at.

Just thought I would post this to see what others would do, or what advice I could get.

Thanks!!!!!

If you have the "bug" anything like me, I couldn't keep an empty tank around for long just based on the off chance that I might get hit again. It's not fun thinking about the heartache of starting over again, either, though. How about a low maintenance setup, with mushrooms and softies, and a few easy fish? Nothing too extravagent, no expensive SPS or rare fish. My last setup crashed after a power outage, and it was very hard to start over again, but I'm glad I did. After half a year, it looks great, and I have backup power now. Then again, a little different from your case, since you will probably have to temporarily leave in a few months and permanently leave after that, but with an easy setup, you could put everything on timers and feeders and leave it on automatic during the in between time. I had an emergency where I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks, and because it was set on auto like this, it was ok when I got back; I just wouldn't keep any tough care corals this way.

Sorry to hear about your losses. I know that it is a huge bummer to lose all your fish and everything in your tank. When I had freshwater I had cichlids in my 75g tank. Well anyways I went home one weekend and while I was gone my roommates had a party at our place. Anyways long story short they decided to get the fish drunk and decorate the tank with beer cans. When I came back my mated pair of Jack Dempseys were dead and also my favorite fish of all my red Oscar known to all as big poppa. I cant really say what to do in your situation because up in Iowa we dont have a hurricane season. I guess it is entirely up to you. One thing you could look into is if you have any family out of hurricane area you could just get a few fish and transport them with you and bring a smaller tank to set up for them until it is safe to go back home. That is an option I could come up with.
Good luck with everyone and sorry for your loss
At least your house was left in one piece so you didnt lose your entire system with it.
