So two months my 75g tank has been setup and going strong. The wife was in Cedar Rapids two weekends ago and got a powder brown tang she fell in love with at the petco down there. 2 days later it showed signs of ich We got a hospital tank going after about the 4th day but it was to late, all of our fish are dead now.

My question going forward is how long or what do I need to do to my tank before adding more fish? I assume water changes, but what else can I do that wont hurt my corals?

the ich can not survive with out fish...


you need to wait one complete lifecycle before adding fish, so all the ich dies off...


so a month and you should be good to ad some new fish

FWIW I would not reccomend that tang in a 75, they are prone to get sick quickly

I think about a month. Acidlittle just got done quarantining all his fish. Maybe he can chime in here.

I've bought a good majority of fish from there due to the good prices . I've had a few die but it was more due to my husbandry or inadequate environment most of the time.

Best practice would be to quarantine the fish in a hospital tank before putting them in your tank, no matter where you buy them from.

EVERY fish I've ever bought from Petco was the plague to my other tank inhabitants. AVoid them like the plague.

I didn't have a quarantine tank setup before, but now I do for the future.

I bought a yellow tang from petco 2 years ago and it is still with me. but i also QT first before placing into the main tank.

but i agree i would wait 4-6 weeks without any fish and then you will be ready to start adding again. so if you want add a fish to your QT now and keep an eye on him till your main tank finishes then you will all ready have a fish to go in.

Wait 6 weeks before adding anything with gills.... Typical life cycle is 28 days, but it is better to be safe than sorry as 1 ich cyst can become 10,000 tomophytes in short order.

Future: Keep cupramine copper on hand and a copper test kit. Hospital tank should be 20 gallons or larger if possible. A magnifying glass is $1 at dollar general and well worth it. I never treat a fish before they show signs of disease, but many do a preliminary copper treatment in the first 24hours as it is easier to attack early than "save" a sick fish. I personally do not like to stress fish when un-necissary as my opinion is that this too can weaken a fish and make it suceptable to illness.
