That to my kids help, I have a problem I hope one of you can give me some advice. When I got my 180 the stand needed a little work so I sanded it down and restained it. Well this past weekend with the weather being nice and being a holiday weekend I had some more time to put a few coats of polyuathan on the stand. I left the tank on the stand because it was too heave for my son and I to pick it up. So I just did everything except the top of the stand. I plan on putting styrofoam there anyway, so no sence in finishing it. The problem is my son (11)
decided he wanted to help, So when I went to go get super ready, He was going to have the stand finished for me. Very nice grester. BUT he polyurathaned the top of the stand, where the tank was sitting. He even polyed the "Wood Trim" on the tank.
So Sunday after we finished up the Easter festivities. I noticed the tank was not on the stand straight. and tried to straighten it up. I would not move. I have the nieghbor come over and we both tried to move the tank. Still wont budge. I believe me son polyuathaned the tank to the stand! How can I get this to move.
Is there something out there that will disovle the poly. but won't hurt the seals of the tank. I afraid if I try to use a crowbar or something like that it will crack the bottom of the tank. I tryed to use a razor a cut between them. But I believe it goes all the way under the tank. ADVICE PLEASE! :mad2:

Ouch! Might try using a long piece of monafilament and starting in one corner. While two people gently lift, begin working the monafilament between the tank and stand like a cheese slicer. It is likely only a few puddles that formed between the tank and stand that are glueing the two together.

Good Luck!

Would some sort of a polyurethane stripper be able to be used on this if applied in a very thin line right along the bottom of the tank trim?

I tried the razor blade. To short I keep getting it stuck under and have a hard time getting it out. I just got off the phone with Minwax people. They said any stripper should gum up the polyurethane stuff and then loosen it. But won't stripper be cossek to the silicone seal. They also said it will probly echt the glass. If it is just on the bottom no real big deal. Mostly worried about the seals. Does anyone know if the stripper will mess up my seals.

Try using a hair dryer to heat the poly and make it softer. Then either try sliding the tank or using the fishing line trick to break the seal.

It feels like just parts of it. Because the razor goes in all the way in some parts then gets stuck and i have to back it out. Then I can't get it in where it gets stuck at all. Probley 4 of the 6 foot front and maybe 15 or 20 inch on the one side is probley stuck to the stand

I can relate...I polyurethaned the lid of my canopy to the base for my pico and I had to kick it apart. Try scoring the places where the polyurethane is with a razor blade multiple times and eventually you should be able to get the razor all the way through.

You can go the the hardware store and buy all kinds of different types and lengths of razor blades.

You might also try a fillet knife. They are usually pretty thin.

I think one of the "Ginsu" type knives would also do the trick.

get a strong thin piece of wire, wrap it around wood blocks at each end, and slide it under the tank. Should cut right through it.

Still wont budge. been using sa razor on it day. But then I just may not be strong enough to move it. Just keep chipping away at it. But I'm getting a little depressed about it. Almost feel like taking a sledge hammer to it. That will definatly loosen it up!

if the razor isnt working, you should probably try something else... fishing line or wire sounds like a good idea.

tried those first, they keep breaking. even the 14lbs test fishing.
Was told stripper, mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol. But I am nervous about those. Last resort. I wouldn't be that big of a deal to have to reseal the tank. But if the toxins leach into the glass to much. I would contaminate the tank. Hoping to get it scored enough, then if I can get my strong enough guys to try to pick up the tank evenly with enought force the weight of the stand will pull itself off the tank.

daughter called, she said she read this and I was told not to break the tank. She is not going tank hunting with me when she gets back from college. Her words were "Put down the sledge hammer"

I think you are all getting a little out of control here. I mean wood blocks with wire? Razor blades! I can understand your frustration but seriously I wouldn't use anything but a nice old piece of hickory - after all he's still your son!

considered that, But I might have lost it. He is grounded to his room no tv, or games or friends for 1 week. Might be longer if I can't get this tank off. And if it breaks???????? "Fox 2 news tonight. A story in for Highland. A mother has been arested on ______, charges tonight all because her son Ployeed the tank to the stand. I realize he was trying to help me. But I told him DON'T TOUCH IT" He wanted to surprise me. Well he did do that!

Rather than fishing line, use wire. Or even the wire to hang pictures. Use anything you can attach it to on either side and pull it through. Should NOT break

Good luck

aw...tough call. He was trying to do good, but had been told not to touch though. Bummer for everybody involved. :( I can't imagine that the application of some kind of stripper using something like a modeling paint brush or q-tip or something like that would have any effect much more than the immediate area applicated upon.
