What is the name of that fish with the green body and orange spots? I've seen it around but don't know its common name or scientific name.

The polyp eating fish is a ornage spotted file fish and yes it does actually look like its going to explode. I bought it becuase the LFS had it trained to eat flake food and it survived quite a while in a bare bones tank. I hoped maybe it wouldn't be so voracious a coral eater but boy was I wrong. At least it's healthy and there are plenty of corals for it to browse through without causing to much damage to any one of them.

Oxymonacanthus longirostris - Harlequin Filefish or Orange Spotted Filefish...

Rarely alive for more than a week in captivity. In the wild almost only eats Acropora polyps.

asnatlas on paper it looks good but it's hard to tell where your cut-outs in the top will be. Remember you don't want to heat up acrylic- it will crack if the cold water splashes on the hot acrylic, so you can't place a halide to close to the top over a brace. I have one halide directly over the acrylic but I keep it slightly elevated and periodically check to make sure it doesn't get to hot. Also will the actinics in the very front of the tank actually be over any corals? If not you will loose that flourescing quality we all look for out of actinics. At four foot wide you could also run your bulbs front to back instead of length wise. My bulbs are actually ran front to back although my tank is 5 foot wide. I dont' worry about the front 12" as I try to keep it free from corals anyway. Just trying to keep you thinking.

My tank is 3/4" Low Iron glass with 4" Euro-Bracing only so the top is nice and open... This tank is also going to be against the wall and will be viewable from 3 sides... At first I did think about running the T5's across the 48" width, do you think that would be better ?? The tank will mostly be LPS and softies with a few SPS and Clams... But I do plan on having a few corals / clams up front...

OK guys...cable & TV out all Sunday so I am a little late with this comment but it NEEDS to be said. You guys are ticking me off with calling that skimmer "The Big Ugly"!! It's not ugly. It's beautiful. Very beautiful. If you were Dr. Frankenstein, would you call your lab-built son "ugly"? I think NOT!!

Lets' come up with a better name...suggestions:

1. bazoomba
2. giant espresso machine
3. latte jacuzzi
4. FFF skimmer
5. chubby
6. ???

ok guys your killing me here ! i just about dumped my coffee on the key board reading those comments. (ROFLMAO!) how about we name the next one a good name and leave this one the big ugly. because in my mind it is ugly, and it dont have any fung shway! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

i personaly like mudzilla as a name for it.

mudzilla is a good one! I wonder if we could figure out a name that includes volcano? 'cause that is how it operates.:D

I think teh big ugly is marketable. Keep it.

That's kind of what I was thinking!

I LIKE IT!

OMG! It's Frankenskimmer!

Take the top and you could have a nice nude foam party! (Ask your wife she might go for it... You never know)

Let me think- Hey Honey want to roll around in the waste products produced by my aquarium? Doesn't quite sound right.

i told you this thread would get off subject if i posted pics of the big ugly here energy.   anyways i just took a trip to go look at a small piece of equiptment that will let me build some bigger parts for that ugly mother. im hoping to get a cnc router in the next month or so. then i can build what i want with out having to pay $150 an hour to have some one else make it for me.

Maybe I missed it here, but is the skimmer being force fed air by the air pump or is it just drawing it on its own?
