So.... I have found a couple LFS stores around here that have saltwater.... Picture Perfect in Marina, Oceans Above in Salinas and Petfun(Salinas/Monterey)

There should be more I assume but I have not been to them.

I wanted to create this thread so use locals can post killer sales or nice pieces that came into one of our stores...maybe someone is looking for something someone else saw in Salinas? Whatever the case we should keep each other posted on whats new.

Post pictures or announcments of stuff going on at the LFS.

theres a petfun in monterey? you mean petco? i usually dont shop at oceans above for a couple reasons
they like to over price alot of things i went in for a koralia and the #1 was 65.00 and just went up in price for the other models. i was at there store a month ago and found some coral i wanted and a fish but the guy working there didnt know how much they were or if they were even selling the coral......:eek1:

I went in and out of Ocean's Above for 2 years hoping they would stock something other than fish but they never added anything. It's been at least 8 months since I've been there. Do they have anything other than fish? I do remember seeing some Ricordia but they did not impress me too much.

They have a colony tank there but no frags. 2x54w T5 GLO fixture over a 55g I think, not too sure. I pop in there in hopes of rare fish but no dice.

Picture Perfect got a clown tang, some cool wrasse, pearly jaw, falco hawk, blue line trigger, coral beauty and some other stuff... pretty cool.

check out the chompers on this guy at PP.

HI
Am new to S.W. and just started cycling my tank. Been to both stores this week. The guy at Oceans Above didn't know too much and could only sell me things so I went to P.P. Total different expience. Very helpful. Got me excited! Picked up a koralia#1 for $43.00. Don't know if thats the best price but just wanted to support the LFS after all the great advice. Sounds like a steel compaired to O.A. price.

Just wanted to say Hi. I'm new to the hobby. Cycling my tank now. Was in P.P. on Friday. They got a new shipment in and were getting more on Sat. You might want to given them a call or go check it out.

good to see another hobbyist in the area Starfish! It seems like the peninsula/Mont. county reefkeepers are slowing starting to connect!

PP has been a great LFS for me- especially because the staff will give you some decent advice, a rarity in this hobby. Now, they are far from perfect, but I have had minimal losses thanks to info here on RC and by choosing livestock wisely from this store alone (and from other generous individuals). If you haven't tried it, give the Marine Environment salt they stock a try (by AquaCraft). My reef seems do well with it. If you buy it in bulk they give you a discount.

I buy the 25gal bags- make up a full 25gal and let it cure for 2 days and then have enough water premixed for 2 sizable water changes later down the road. Letting the new salt water age is key. Read about the salt if you don't believe that it is worth the money or hype. It is made in the bay area so another plus is that you are supporting a local business.

Thanks for the salt tip. I'll keep it in mind. I'm planning on starting with fowlr compatible with coral for later. gotta get my brain all soaked up in the stuff before I go reef.

yeah.. . I tried to get some on Friday but they said they got to frag them first and figure out pricing.. the new guy that works there said 25$ per polyp... I might go back next week if they are ready.. but then again, I'm running out of places to put stuff..

Yeah those zoas are pretty cool looking.. 25 a polyp? ouch! can someone confirm this?

Finally someone tore all the brown zenia out of the nano tank they have at PP- I can't wait to see how the pulsing zenia they put in there grows out. And is it just me, or is the grape caulerpa slowly disappearing out of their tanks?? Things are slowly but surely improving around the store- especially on the frag racks. I noticed that their rabbitfish look healthier than ever- my guess would be that they are receiving more regular/ balanced feedings. The plate corals they have also look to be in good health. (the orange one is especially cool- I will get a pic if it doesn't sell before I go back into the store).
