I'm looking for the absolute best looking LR for my FOWLR.
Since I will only have fish and LR, I want the nicest most colorful rock!....opinions?

:eek2:

This might help:
"Differences in the live rock's physical make up from area to area, make for different coraline algae colors to become the dominant colors once the live rock matures in your tank. For example, Fiji live rock is predominantly covered with a purple coraline growth once matured, Tonga , and Carribbean live rock is more rainbow colored, and Marshall Island live rock, has more red coraline algae growth than the others once established. Please note though, that these colors need a short period of time to reappear on your rock. The curing and shipping process, does diminish the coloration, but the chemistry of the particular rock is whats important, and the incredible shapes at time of purchase. Give your tank the lighting and chemistry nescessary and you will enjoy for years the results of your effort."

THat deoends on how much caroline algee is on the rock.
You can get fiji or tonga or any coverd with nice caroline algee groath.
Personally I think Tonga is the best. Just because it has shelf & branch shape in the rock but generally I've seen Tonga just covered with nice purple caroline.

Which ever brand you decide on, if you want the best pieces, it's nice to be able to cherry pick it yourself. Are there any good local shops near you?

if I purchase online, should I go with the closest source for the least amount of die off?

I wouldn't be too worried about it spending too much time out of water. I would say anything less then a week your not in any trouble.
It will be revied after a few days/weeks in your tank.

cheers

nope, closest store is 2hrs away...

It might still be worth the trip. I drove 4 hours to get my own rock.

The kinda rock your looking for requires patience and "cherry picking" .. if you can't see it before you buy its just a "crap shoot" and your going to be disappointed.

Most cost effective method of starting a great reef aquarium with the least amt of algae/hitchhiker/phosphate issues would be to buy some excellent base rock and then place some outstanding mature "cherry picked" live rock on top.

Just a thought.

If this post was last year, I would have said Marshall Island....but you can no longer get that unless you find a reefer that allready has it....I would suggest you find some Irian Jaya live rock....it is super purple....

Is a matter of opinion. For me, I love my Marshall Island, but as mentioned by Sabreman, it's tough to come by these days.

If it were me (it's so easy to spend other people's money), for a FOWLR I'd go with TBS rock.

Do you have a reef club in your area, you can check in the clubs forum for the closest one and see if they have any extra rock to sell, it might save you a trip. You might just end up having to make a road trip and just spend a day hitting up a couple out of town lfs's.

sometimes you can find a package deal--tank live rock ect ect at a very low price
I use this site
www.kijijji.com
Usually its people who just want to get rid of everything at a low price because they are moving on to something else
