The All-Too-Often Asked Question...

I'm planning a pretty major upgrade in the near future, and have come to the point that I'm researching various pieces of equipment... and the all-too-often question popped into my head "Which skimmer should I get?".

Unlike many of the posters that just generally post this question without any criteria :headwallblue:, I'll give you some criteria to go off of:

> Tank size will be approximately 300 gallons, but will be decently stocked (meaning there will be a good amount of fish/waste-makers, and I'm not one to starve my fish if you catch my drift) and maintaining mostly SPS; I would also like to leave open the ability to expand my set-up (i.e., plumb in other tanks- thinking of adding an LPS only tank later on). So the skimmer has to be pretty monstrous.
> This will be an in-sump skimmer that will be used in conjunction with a "back-up" skimmer (my current Vertex Alpha Cone 200) because I travel a little for work, and would hate to come home to a completely skimmerless tank after being gone for a week. Kind of precautionary, not sure why/if this is important (maybe so you know the skimmer will be getting some help from another skimmer), but thought I would share.
> Looking for efficiency. Since I live in Southern California, and get charged up the wazoo by Southern CA Edison for electricity, I would prefer a skimmer that is pretty efficient when it comes to electricity.
> Ability to either 1) Purchase with a head cleaner, or 2) Add a head cleaner later (i.e., swabbie).
> Would prefer that the skimmer doesn't cost more than the tank itself, but all suggestions would be considered since I know if there is one thing to break the bank on, it would be the skimmer.

Thanks in advance for your help,

The ATB gets my vote as well. If not an ATB, I would suggest getting something that has an Askol based pump.

Any reason why you went with the ATB 10.5 over the less expensive ATB 8.5? Their website says they're rated for the same gallons, but I figure the 10.5 (since it is slightly larger) can do more.

Also any other suggestions are welcome!

Now that looks really nice! Have you started it up yet?

Is not here yet. And I expect two weeks until it really breaks in. Got superb reviews and recommendations though. If it works out, I will add one to another tank as well.

Well one of the guys on here that I respect recommended the 10.5. He is an equipment expert (I am not) So that is what I did. I would rather have over capacity instead of under capacity. I think is rationale was the pump difference.

Ok, a couple more things which I have to put out there. I like recommendations from folks that are users not sellers. BRS sells Vertex. I also like to have good customer support and service. ATB is known for its superb customer service.

So the brands I think most are suggesting (on this and another forum) are (in this order):

1. ATB
2. Vertex/Bubble King
3. SWC

Are there any others that people will recommend offering good quality and efficiency? I've always heard Deltec makes great skimmers, but is the extra price worth it? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm willing to pay extra money for better quality, but not if I can get "almost the same" quality for several hundred less.

Also, what are some of the other types/brands of skimmers using the "Askol" pump? I noticed that SWC is one of them, but couldn't really find much else.

Thanks again everyone for your help on this,

-Chad
