The Elegance Coral Project

Hi Dan:

I have emailed you several times. Apparently they are not getting through? Anyway, I will take whatever you can provide currently, and in terms of any orders in the future I think maybe three or four maximum per order per source to assure hopefully more randomness to the samples.

Eric:

A belated Welcome Back! Pleased to see that some interesting findings are being gathered. I read your comments about the Walt Smith discussions. Interestingly, when I contacted Danny today, and in a round about way mentioned this, his comment was that he "just found out last week that he doesn't personally collect them". Hmmmm, that's not initially what I was told. Anyway, he said that Walt does sell them but gets them from another contact? Don't know if that's the case but there it is anyway.

As an aside, just got back from diving in Puerto Rico and was truly amazed at the good conditions on the reefs there. The most amaz'ing experience was hearing Whale song while diving one of the sites! Never heard this before on any of my previous dives. What a fantastic experience!! This lasted the whole 50 or so mins of the dive. Some of the really deep sounds were so penetrating that the tank on my back was actually vibrating from them! I can't really expain it but I wish that every diver could have this experience. I've been dreaming about this ever since that day.

Well, back to the topic:

Quote from Eric:

' Jeff at Jeff's Exotic Fish had offered to order Indoenisan elegance if I paid shipping, and I agreed but have not heard from him since. I will try and contact him this week or if any of you are nearby and can ask for me, I'd appreciate it."

If Jeff comes through, let me know and I will pick up the shipping charges.

Keep up the great work! ;)

Eric

Never received emails check the address you have been sending to. In any event, I will bring in specimens next week and communicate tentative schedule once it becomes available. I may be importing from as many as three different sources in Indonesia who collect from distinct areas. I will ask them to provide additional information on collection that I will forward to you. Hopefully this data will help identify a trend.

regards

By the way I spoke with Walt last week also, he is not importing cats but certainly can get them. I am very confident he will help if he can.

Eric, is that your Dad? He complained that he had to do a lot of reading on the board to find the address and that you made him dig for it.

Glad you have your family's support.

Well it's been a month now since I purchased the corals. I have 2 healthy ones out of 8. 4 others have died. 1 is on the way out and one has always been rather retracted so I can't tell if it's just its MO or something else.

My question is do you think I should ship the healthy ones now or wait longer?

Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Eric,
I will ship all of them FedEx Monday afternoon 4 PMish PST you should receive them Tues. morning.

Regards,
Kevin

We have now enlisted the services of groups in Australia, Israel, and Mexico. Also, it appears we may now have a source for corals with good documentationof the supply country - basically direct source from the countries.

I also have a few new specimens that are rather ideal...one perhaps healthy (?) and one with a classic condition not yet displaying any white material (though I am anxious to see if it exists underneath the polyp). Currently fifteen sick elegance in the study for histology with more on the way this week. Possible scientific support staff in microbiology and protozoology enlisted, as well.

Things are shaping up well. I will be doing some more detailed screening and possible culture of the white material this week.

Eric

Unfortunately I received only 1 cat and it was DOA
I kept the remains in the event that you want it

I have sent emails to the suppliers seeking clarification on
why my orders were not filled. I dont quite understand what has
happened because cats are readily available (Perhaps my ordering pattern has something to do with this.. I order very few)
but the lack of communication from 3 different sources is very strange perhaps it is a Cites issue.

As an aside... I have spoken to a number of 'experts' and they have all reported sucess with cats utilizing antibotics in a quarantine system ... a potential for another flury of replies to this post to put it mildly. I do not believe these were formal research projects.

I will keep in touch

Hi Dan:

If you could find out from these "experts" what ab was used, the dosage, and the protocol, I would be more than happy to really put it to the test.

Eric,

I have just recieved 2 Catalaphyllia in, they appear to be suffering from this ailment. Also, one of the specimens in our owners tank has this condition real bad. After a discussion with him over dinner, he has agreed to let me ship these corals to you.

I figure sending all 3 at once will be the cheapest way. Let me know via PM or email where to send them...

Also, I am an administrator at another Forum. I would like to post the necessary information to help get the knowledge out their about this condition. Is there any links that I can direct my members to so they may be able to offer some financial support to your cause as well?

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your participation and ... Yes, Please! ... we would love for you to spread the word about the project.

The website with information and donation links is:

The mailing address is there under the "contacts" section, but here it is again, too.

RC also did a nice article in the last Reefkeeping Magazine, I'm sure you can still pull it up.

Thanks SO much for your help!

Cathy

What is the current count on donated corals and how many more are needed? The web site only shows 2 corals donated.

Eric

I have been told

Quarantine Tank

Doxycycline, 10mg per gal

Treatment for 4 days

Replace water if discoloration occurs

One result is 10 for 10 survivability
