The Green Killing Machine

As a kid I always wanted a Green Machine big wheel... you are probably talking about something else... sorry.

I had one....it was cool.... Actually I picked up this uv sterilizer thats called a green killing machine or something like that. Just wanted to know if you guys had heard of it or anything about it. I was also talking to someone today about starting a coral tank. I have a different uv sterilizer that I wanted to us on it but it was suggested that a sterilizer wouldnt be a good idea on a coral tank because it kills coral food. What do you think?

I've never used a UV sterilizer, and since my tank is pretty stable, I don't see the need for one on a regular basis. I think I miht use one if I had a CRAZY algae problem, but I think it's more of a cover for an underlying problem. The could be handy, however, if you fixed the problem and then use the UV to clean up everything.

That being said, I've never researched them much, so maybe someone else will provide a counter point.

Matt

i think it all depends on where you place the sterilizer in the loop as to whether this would be the case.....

i had considered using one at one point & my logic for where to place it was as follows:

my sump would be skimmer -> bubble traps -> return <- refugium
i would put the pump that fed the sterilizer in the bubble trap so it would get the cleaned water from the skimmer & it could have the chance to kill the harmful stuff in the water before the beneficial stuff of the refugium (pods etc) were added to the water being returned to the tank in the return chamber

anywhere else (refugium, return or in-tank) than there has more beneficial organisms in the water that it would be killing as well
