The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

I know so far I've been too impatient to do it, but has anyone taken D's advice of quite a while ago of sharpening and balancing the prop/airline/magnet assembly? I can't help but wonder if this wouldn't fix some of the problematic mods out there.

Yo D,... been messen around with the sound issue... and just about ready to go out and get the test caps when I noticed that my MJ wasn't spinning one morning. To make a long story short, the rod had worn away the side of the rigid tubing cross brase. What I was using was a rigid tubing cross brase with the hole drilled halfway into the tubing. this is where the end of the rod went. Well somehow it managed to wear a hole right through the side of the rigid tubing and thus was allowing the rod to slip outside the brase and then it wouldn't reverse on startup. I think with the extra play in the hole is where my vibration/noise was comming from. I'm going to replace the tubing with another piece but bring the rod out throuh it and use the MJ rod cap on the end. Just wanted to mention this for anyone using the rigid tubing as their cross brase... I remember there being a few.

That would be why there is noise. The SCH40 pipe has an ID that is larger than the MJ's impeller port hole and this allows too much room for it to move and be slightly off centered. If you try adding a 1.5" PVC testcap to it, I think it will be much better as the test cap is a near perfect fit of the MJ.

well didnt do anything to the noisey mj 1200 but it seems to ahve fixed itself. i did however take off one prop from the dual prop mj1200, way more flow out of a single prop version, probably because it can spin it faster ( also why i thnk the seio didnt work well, wouldnt spin a fast enoug rpm to really get these things going like a mj does).

now i run only one stream at a time, using those timers i have them pulsing every 30min but am thinking of changing it to an hour since the timer sometime gets stuck on an on and an off tab thus stopping to work.

the flow in the tank with both streams running is was greater than what is in that video that i posted, in fact when i turn them both on and dont have them aimed just right it will blow multiple sps colonies right over and really trash everything else

got my first one working last night and i am very happy : )

one question . how do you get the circular tabs to stay on the end. they don't seem to fit as tight as they did on the metal rod that is in the original impeller. guess id rather not glue them on

Do you mean the black/red rubber pieces from the Maxijet?

what i did i put glue on the cf rod and the wiped it off with a napkin so some of the napkin gets glued on the rod. the with dremal i sanded it down until the cap fit tightly.

I'm trying to construct one for a MaxiJet 400,but I don't understand what to do with the impeller from the existing pump.It looks like I have to cut the blades off and remove the verticle nubs fron the sides.Does it need to be filed down to be mounted to the ridgid tubing,and which end of the tubing does it attach to?

Yes that is precisely what you have to do.

1. Cut off the impeller blades.
2. Shave or file the rest down so that it's about the same diameter as the rigid tubing.

3. Glue the plastic piece onto the magnet unit.

The rest of the assembly is pretty much the same as the MJ1200 and MJ900. Although you might want to use a bit of glue to hold the fleible airline onto the filed off plastic impeller just to m,ake sure it won't slip off.

So I am gluing back where it came from?
Does the rigid tubing sit on top of it,or do I file it down enough to fit inside the rigid tubing?Does the flexible tubing Attach this piece to the rigid tubing?

The rigid tube will sit ontop of it and you will use the flexible airline as a coupling to the two pieces as like in the MJ1200 and MJ900 mods.

The easiest way to glue the plastic impeller back onto the magnet for the MJ400 would be to use a 2 part epoxy. just be sure you line up the hole by placing the cf the rod inside the magnet and extend it through the plastic impeller piece. Then just let it cure overnight.

Mine fit on the CF rod nice and snug with nothing added.

are there any advantages to using the stainless steal rod over the carbon fiber ?

If you're making a lot of the mods, the stainless steel rods will be cheaper in the end.

The stainless steel rod is also smoother and has less friction than the CF rod. Not that I noticed any difference in performance or noise.

i was talking about it with someone today and they thought some of the noise might be because the hole i drilled in the cross bar isn't "exactly" the same size as the CF rod. it has just a tiny bit of play.

a quick easy fix for that if that's the problem would be to wrap a bit teflon tape on the end of your CF rod? See if that'll help.
