The lfs

Has anyone ever realized that when you ask about a fish they come and say the fish should be in a really big tank, all the while I is right in front of you in a 20 gallon? The lfs told me not to put mandarins in te same tank, while right in front of me there are like, 7 mandarins all in a small 20 gallon tank along with some really big aiptasia ib a rock splat in the center.

They fish in LFSs have a much quicker turnover rate. They are only in the tanks for about two weeks at most before being purchased. It's easier for the staff to locate fish if they a all kept in one species tank. They fish are placed to sell, not for husbandry purposes as that's what the owners are for.

I know, but it still seems sad. I meanbit like the goldfish that are kept in those smaall tanks as feeder fish. If one ges ick, they all do. And then yourfish gets sick for eating it. It's different, but kind of close.

Exactly. That is why an LFS can keep a 40 gallon breeder full of firefish but a group will not survive long term in that sized tank.

Feeder goldfish are bred by the thousands in lakes in the Ozarks. They aren't designed to live long. They are feeders for a reason.

Well that and imagine trying to catch a 2" fish out of a 90gal. That's probably more stress on the fish than living in a small tank for a few days. And stress on the employee trying to catch it... I can only wonder at the blood pressure rates for LFS workers...

I understand your concerns, but like others here have expressed fish are in stores to be displayed and sold. I've been to LFS that try to keep holding tanks somewhat attarctive by putting rocks, fake plants, etc. in there. The utter chaos that all the tank inhabitants are put through every time ONE of those 30 firefish gets sold jsut doesn't do much for the health of the rest of the bunch. The same could be said of the lone jumbo fish that can barely turn in the holding tank. Stores can't dedicate 300G tanks that require scuba gear every time somebody buys a foot-long grouper. Looks weird, and sad at the same time, but there really isn't a better alternative.

I have one at my parent that is at least 11 years old. I think the record is 60 years. They are used as feeders because they are hardy.
