The many moods of toadstools?

Ok, I have had a toadstool fo about 1 week. For the most part it has been, moderately open to very open most of the time. I have even seen times where the polyps are 75% extended. But tonight it is as small as it can possibly make itself. Between yesterday (when it was nearly 100% extended with 75% plus polyps open) and today where is is a shriveled little thing there have been no changes in water quality, flow, or light level. So why the hugh difference is extension and size?

Toadstools are notorious for shedding their slime coat. When they do this they shrivel up and look really upset. However this is just normal behavior and they will probably be fine within the next 2 or 3 days. Be prepared as this usually happens every month or month and a half.

Also if you see something slimy looking on any of your other corals, it is probably a good idea to peel that slime off. It does contain nematocysts and might make whatever coral it lands on mad but it most likely won't kill anything in your tank.

The title "The many moods of a Toadstool" is right on the mark. I bought a Toadstool as one of the first corals in my tank seven years ago. This coral will look great for several months then for several weeks its polyps will not come out. Then it will shed for days and then look good again. It currently is dead center in my tank, completely open and looking great. It is a coral you never want to give up on based on how it looks.

Hmm.. good thing I found this. I bought a little three toadstool Sunday and it was fully open Sunday. On monday it was around 90% open and it closed Monday night and today is still closed..

How long does it take the shed its slime coat?
