Hey folks. I am very happy to see a club here in Knoxville. I'll join officially as soon as finances allow. I have never kept an aquarium past goldfish but my 16yo son and I are going to try an all in one reef tank by the end of the year. We are looking at one of two options, either the 34g Red Sea Max or the new 28g Nano Cube HQ1. Been doing lots of research on the setup and keeping of the tank. Any Suggestions ? Thanks all.

welcome and both are good choices.Bigger is better and the lights on the rsm are t-5s so u will not have the heat issues.Ihave have not see the new nano ones but for me i would go wiht the rsm.

First off WELCOME!!!!! On the nano, I personally wouldn't do either... They're expensive for what you get, and you end up spending more on trying to make them work than you would have if you just bought a RR tank and set it up right in the first place... One of our members has a RSM and he had problems with heat this summer... I don't think the fans inside the hood were sufficient... And thats only with 2 t5's!!!!!!!!!!! Remember, this is just one person's opinion... Hope this helps!!!

Welcome to ETRC forum on RC

That would be me with the RSM and heat issues. I still have issues with the additional 2 fans but it's never got over 83-84 and now stays about 81-82 with the extra fans. I hear RSM has new fans they are sending out which are more effective.

I love my RSM even though the skimmer sucks and the heat issues scare me. You have to consider that I just down sized from a 300g so my electricity is cut in half and my maintence is WAY less/shorter. I only plan to keep zoas and LPS and clams so I don't need the pristine water SPS requires. Still, I agree with Randy, RSM is expensive and you could probably buy a nice RR (reef ready) tank for less money and have more options of what you want to keep and more tank volume.

If you want to kill a couple hours, there's a dedicate thread on RC for RSM owners. They even set up their own site but it's not too good. RSM Thread

LMK if you have any questions or want to see a running RSM to help you make your decision. (yes, we welcome hobbyists to come to our house to see our tanks)
