The real deal??

I have the opportunity to buy this chalice. It is supposed to be the Tyree True Watermelon and the owner claims lineage. I'm not trying to argue, I just want to get some opinions. This is a pic from the owner from when he bought it.

Here is a pic from two days ago that I took myself. What do you think??

What is the lineage. If you don't believe a person with proof of lineage how will you believe that anything is what they say it is? That is a nice sized colony.

It's not that I don't believe him, I just want some opinions from people who have this piece. It is a very nice sized colony, so you can imagine it's not cheap.

looks like the watermelon....but there are a few variations. where did he say he got his piece from originally?

To be honest...it's AS pretty. If he can't prove lineage, then you can't either...so it really doesn't matter.

He got his piece from a LFS near me. I've gotten several Tyree pieces from them also. Like I said before it't not that I don't believe him, I just want some opinions.

It looks like a very nice watermelon to me. If you like it and think its worth the price then buy it. Who cares if it has lineage.

At least 2/3 of the reefers on this site. And sellers because they can get a lot more with a brand name than without.

Is he selling the entire colony? Or just a frag? Let us know how much he is asking for how big of a piece and that will help up determine worth/value.

It is a nice piece (is the rim blue or is it just the picture?) and I'm sure it does not come at a bargain, so do your investigation and go with your gut.
BTW I just bought a piece that is supposed to be a original Tyree and paid a obscene amout of money for it so I know how you feel.

I would hope thats not a true statement. I would hope most of the reefers on this site would buy a coral because it looks cool, which the 2nd pic does, and NOT because it has some ridiculous fancy name attached to it. There are several pics on this board comparing the "true" watermelon with another they have gotten that looks just as good, but that they paid 1/3 of the price for. You do know that LE really stands for "Lets Extract".........another $100 out of your wallet.

Like JGoslee said, that looks like a nice watermelon to me. If its a decent price, snag it up for sure. :smokin:

skydragon- I didn't take the first pic, but I did take the second. The first came from a friend of mine at the LFS where he bought it originally.

I guess I was trying more to convince myself not to spend the money, but it does seem worth it. It's beautiful either way. Thanks guys.

Very nice coral. It could be the camera or lighting or anything really, but it doesn't appear/look as pink and the tyree watermelon.

It's under XM 15k's. I'm sure it'll look even nicer in my tank. :smokin: It's now on hold while I figure out where the money will come from....

Agreed. That lineage stuff is kinda ridiculous IMO. If you are paying top dollar for a coral's "pedigree" I guess it's important, but remember, by that logic, the price should come down for each frag that gets sold, which is rarely the case. Some of the the Tyree stuff is indeed really nice but there's a bit of hysteria about it right now that I think is a bit silly.

All that really matters is if YOU like it.

I did it and I couldn't be happier. This was taken immediately after acclimation.
