The real purple monster!

I use a 44 gal brute can from home depot. Mix in 2 cups of kalk . The reefiller pumps are adjustable depending on your evaporation rates. My tank is a 180 so i chose not to use a float switch. I simply use a timer having the kalk go in overnight. It has kept the ph balanced which has improved the tank quite a bit. The 44 gals lasts a couple of weeks, before you reefill. It is basically idiot proof, no chance of float switches failing or over dosing. You can find more info in the chemistry forum. I have been doing this for a couple of years now and still have not cleaned the bottom of the can. Pretty sure Farley mentions a possible benefit form the residue left over.

I do a similar thing except I use a 5 gallon bucket with a float from the R.O and an ehiem hooked up to a float in the sump but I have a pump mixing the kalk mix up but some one told me thats not good, do you have anything mixing it up? If not are you pulling from the cleared mix. Mine is milky from the mixing. Also do you have problems with Mg? What is your tanks Alk?
Thanks
Tom
BTW I have been to the forum but couldn't find anything. Do you have a link?

This should be the link. His method is intrested me because of the ease of mixing, and having to mix once every 2 weeks or so. I keep the pickup off the bottom , only adding the clear stuff. Float swithes scare me, friend has gassed his tank on a few occassions because of them failing or human error. My tank has been running since 1996 without crashing. That is one of the reasons. The reefiller pump can pump up to 200 feet if need be so the large can can sit anywhere. These pumps deposit the water drip by drip. I felt that dosing only at night would really help the ph swings so i went with the timer not the float switch. I never have considered mg. The growth and color in the tank has continued to improve through the years so i have not looked at mg. My Procal reactor keeps the dkh around 9

Sorry to be a pain. But I'm trying to understand. So do you mix the kalk in every 2 weeks and then just let is settle ,leaving it undisturbed until the next 2 weeks ? Do you mix it by hand?
Thanks
Tom

That is correct. Just dump in the kalk, 2 cups, quick stir with a piece of wood and that is it. I dont touch it till i mix again 2 weeks or so later. You can stop by and check it out if you like. It will clear up any questions you might have.
