The Red Sea Max

Coral Reef's got one. If I didn't stumble on to a deal, I was weighing this against the JBJ 28.

You havin' any issues with heat? Is lighting sufficient? Can you mod it much/do you want to mod it much?

I had some initial heat issues, but Red Sea sent me an add-on cooling fan for the Max which just clips into a space previously occupied by a vent/face plate. Now it's been extremely stable at about 78-79.5. That fan sure did the trick, and is virtually silent while operating. I have it on a variable power adapter so that I can lower or increase the airflow as necessary. I'd set it up with a temperature controller, but seems like an expensive accessory for a $10 fan.

I'm very pleased with the 110 watt T5's. They seem very bright, and the built in timer makes the transtition between the daytime lighting and nighttime LED's hassle free.

I've heard that NanoTuners might be coming out with an upgraded lighting system for it, but I kind of like the T5's that are already on it. I also don't think that I would want to add any more flow, as it moves things around pretty good as it is. You know, so far I can't see anything that I think needs upgrading, though I know some people will want bigger and "better" lighting.

I think that's it's an interesting design, with a lot of potential. But I've only had this thing up and running for 3-weeks or so, and things can change very quickly in this hobby...

Nanocustoms has the 70w & 150w HQI upgrades on their site. I think that would be pretty slick... probably would require a chiller though.

Something I've been wondering: Can you take the prism skimmer out of the back chamber and fit a tunze nano DOC in there?

It's really not a prizm skimmer. It's larger and has a different pump configuration (kind of similar to a recirc pump) . I think it's works rather well. I'm getting a very consistent and thick foam right now.
But the whole skimmer unit does slide right out, so I guess you could go with whatever skimmer would fit in the space.

Its probably a variation of a prizm skimmer, the design is really similar, I have one ( a skimmer) and dont use it because it put out WAYYYYY to many bubbles.

But that thing sure looks nice. I would like to see one in person. CRS is a trek for me.

They have them at Fish Planet as well. though I saw the silver version there, and i have to say that the silver was rather...unflattering.

and it comes with a fire extinguisher. I have heard that the stronger lights create way to much heat. They weren't designed to handle that kind of heat.

Now, the stock lighting. It states T-5's, are they the double ended T-5's? Or the one sided 4 pin PCs that you see everywhere? Because when I was looking at it, it looks like the power compacts.

I just picked one up at Fish Planet today. $550 + $130 for the stand. Very good price considering it was in-stock and an impulse buy. Customer service was good.

How did you get the extra fan? I'm guessing I'll need one as an intermediate step. Hopefully I will not need a chiller.

Where is a good place to get live rock in Sac?

Thanks,
Pete
