The Reef in a Shed

It has been in the planning for a long time now, I will post updates as I get time to do so.

My goal here is to have a small Coral Propagation Setup that will cover it's costs and make a little extra on the side, I am not looking to make this my only form of income, I want to keep it a hobby. I am sure it will get quiet hectic but if it wasn't life would be quiet boring.

Here is pic of the Concrete Slab that was poured and now ready for the Shed to sit on top of it.

I will post more later this week when i upload the photo's to my blog.

Are you going to build the roof out of some type of material that allows sunlight in like a green house?

Unfortunatly this will not be possible becuase of where I live and also the location of the Shed.

This should answer your question about the roof.

I will insulate the roof on the inside so there will be no light coming from the clear panel that you see in the pic.

I like seeing international posts, especially unique propagation setups.

This is true, keep the pictures coming!

Well this will definitely be unique.

I will keep things updated here on RC but i will also post some other things on my Blog related to the shed.

What size pad is that?,and how long before you add on?

The size of the pad is a little bigger than 8' x 7' as the Shed's outer dimensions is 8′[L] x 7′[W] x 8′[H], so the shed fits nice and snug on the pad.

I will post more when time permits...

is the shed made of metal sheets? if so watch out for heat build up during summer. these things get hot. And i mean really hot. And verry cold in the winter. I suggest insulating the whole inside.

Yes, the shed is constructed of PVC Coated metal sheets. I will post some pics of the insulation later tonight.

The complete inside will be insulated and all the little gaps in the metal sheeting will be filled with expanding insulation foam to make sure it is nicely insulated.

Great idea with the expanding insulation foam, what size tank or tanks are you planning on having? And also what type of lighting are you going to use? Sorry i guess i am getting a little ahead i just love build threads especially outdoor builds

Ive been thinking about doing something like this myself just slightly larger with a 8'x12' shed so i will definately be tagging along for this one.

Have to get as much insulation as possible, to keep the heat in so the expanding foam is great because it can fill all the little gaps easily and quickly.

The tank size will be a 4' x 2' x 1', this size is because the tanks are being donated to be from a setup that is being torn down. The lighting will be T5's.

Here is a pic of the insulation, you can see more on my blog.

THIS IS NOT ADVERTIZING FOR XTRATHERM!!! :lmao:

buy a good chiller

Not sure I will need one but I can easily get my hands on 1 if required.

The pad was decided due to the size of the tanks I was going to get, all the frag tanks I have are donated from a setup that is being torn down.

Once I have some time I will post some pics of the setup that the tanks came from and pics of the tanks themselves.

This is what the Shed looks like with the Insulation done and the racking installed.

I have wanted to do a prop shed for a while. My goal would to be to try and get away with solar tubes or similar as well as passive heating/cooling. I think it would be doable with the right species selection and area.

Many of the GH threads state they wish they went with a more traditional building than a full GH. Amount of light never seems to be an issue. I would try and get some solar tubes in there...

looking good Titan, u on any of the UK forums?

Thanks, yeah I am on UR, I will do a post on UR later this week.

Problem with Solar Tubes in the way i am doing it is that all my tanks are stacked to use ALL the Space, so Solar Tubes would only be beneficial for the tank on the top of the rack. If you were to do a one level setup I think it should work with Solar Tubes but then again why not use a GH then?

looking good so far, you going to run a skimmer on the tanks or going the skimmer-less route?

Thanks...

There will be a Skimmer involved, it will be a MRC MR-2 that was donated to me.

Just a quick update...

Pumps are in...They are connected to the Sump Tank using 2" Tank Connectors.

1 for flow, 1 for redundancy on the flow, if 1 fails or requires repair/maintenance and 1 for Skimmer.

Here is a pic of the Strainer I will be using for the Pumps.

I will try post more later this week but Check my Blog for more details...
