The Reef Survived

First off thanks to all RC members for their input on different topics. I had been 7 days without utility power (power was restored 2hrs ago) because of Hurricane ISSAC. I have been running on a small generator with a UPS backup to keep one powerhead running in between running and stopping my generator for oil and fuel changes. My schedule was 5 hrs run and 3 hrs off for the generator. Used frozen bottle water to keep the temp down, ran my lights when the generator was running and was able to still circulate through my sump (maintained GFO, GAC, Calcium Reactor and Vinager dosing while running my generator). It was rough going but everything survived. Alot of this I contribute to the members and their advice. Thanks PS, Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in but I'm tired and need rest.

Damn issac, I live in Louisiana and it hit me as well. Thankfully never lost power!!! Glad ur tank is up and running smoothly again!!!

Glad for you man.

Theres a guy on my local LA forum with a 750g and 60+ fish. His entire house was flooded. Something like 10ft of water. He lives where the levees failed.

Glad everything made it. Lafayette didn't lose power at all, fortunately.

Geaux xman, that's terrible. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the news on the flooding in Plaquemines.

Great to hear that with a bit of effort, well, maybe a lot of effort, and the proper equipment(generator, UPS etc.) that you can pull your reef through an extended power outage like you experienced. Glad to hear it worked out.

To be completely honest (even if a little insensitive regarding the lives of fish), when I see something like this, I couldn't care less about my aquarium. I hope the people make it through OK and that they can restore their lives.

Congrats to the OP for toughing it out with your fish. I'm glad to hear it was a happy ending. I have also gotten incredibly good advice here and this site has saved my tanks numerous times over.

That's insane. I feel horrible for the people who's houses are destroyed. You work so hard for something and to own a house and raise a family, only to have something like that happen. As they say, "when it rains, it pours"

This is not the first time nor will it be the last time something like this happens here in SE Louisiana during a Hurricane. Levee's are not high enough and the marshland (which use to be our buffer for these storms) has eroded to the point of not much left. Goverment was warned about this in the 60's but nothing was done and now it's pretty much too late. The marchland was eroding at 30-34 square miles a year but has dropped to around 24 square miles a year. This is because there is not much left.

Glad you made it through okay. My wife has been down there helping out with evacs and transporting people around. Says some areas were really hit hard.

I'll pass the message along when she gets back. Of course she may of went just to get some of that great cooking :D
