The saga of the fan worm :0)

I do have a fondness for these creatures and over the years always keep several in the tank. Fans will pop their heads when stressed and/or harassed, they do grow them back, usually the experts will say, they grow them back smaller, then may pop them again, and eventually starve to death. Thus is the life of a fan worm...anyway...Ive had my hawaiian for quite some time....maybe a year or so? His tube was getting really beat up and was barely above the substrate level, he is attached to a rock so I tried to protect him and make sure he gets plenty to eat. anyway, he popped his feathers one day and I figured that combined with virtually NO tube, was the end of him.

k, well one day, here sticking out of what is barely any tube at all is a feather bout 1/8 of an inch....bugger grew his feathers back...great....but more amazing to me, since I had witnessed that before...is that when I wasnt paying attention, thinking he was doomed, he rebuilt his TUBE? now that isnt all that amazing, except for the fact that I was under the ( apparently false) impression that they did not do a lot of tube building in tanks. Mostly because their natural habitat is muddy flats etc and they usually live in sand or crushed coral in a tank...
so his new tube is the paperlike, brown that one would expect.
my question is WHAT did the bugger make it out of? spit? poo? chewed up food? now im curious and fascinated LOL ( OK im a simple girl, what can I say? )

here is a pic that clearly shows the new tan tube over the beat up one.

Then last Jan i purchased a coco worm....it was NOT impressed with its new digs, and popped its feathers, but grew them back VERY quickly, I was surprised, I figured that was going to be a lot of $$ down the toilet. she grew back both heads and I think they are more luxurious than before..just to the right and behind her is the little christmas tree worm, had her for several years, she has a hard calcified tube attached to a rock.
