The search for glass in PGH area (or Can I use plexiglass baffles)

Thanks for reading!

I was working on my plumbing the other day and managed to put my hand through one of the baffles in my sump.

Because it is the chamber under the drain, I have it a bit higher to support an HOB skimmer.

Now that the panel is broke, water level dropped and I had to rig an old skimmer to work. I want to get back to the good one, so I need to repair this quickly.

Does anyone know if you can get fair quality glass cut in or around PGH?

I went the lowes (maybe home depot, dont remember) route and ended up with sliced knuckles and a semi-working sump.

My only other thought was trying to try to replace the baffles with plexiglass, but I've heard this is dangerous.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

i just got my sump baffles cut here:

very helpful, and quick turn around. i got 4 pieces cut. all were 11.75" wide. 2x 10" tall, 1x18" tall, and 1x12" tall. cost about $60 for everything after taxes.

all pieces were 1/4" thick with all edges smooth beveled, so no cuts while handling.

what size is your sump? i sadly realized after i spent all kinds of time setting an old 55 gallon as a sump that it would not fit in my stand. so i have a 55 sump sitting around that i don't think i'll be using. i'd let it go for $100 if you're interested (basically cost of materials. tank was $50, baffles were $60, and a tube of GE Silicon I).

I have a 40b that I actually had to alter my stand to fit in. Thanks for the offer though!

Thanks for the tip, I will give them a call. That's not bad at all for price. I have learned my lesson from the hardware stores, it was cheap, but what a terrible experience.

These guys are awesome! I only needed one piece, called and they can have it ready any time today. Can't ask for better service than that!

$20 for 17 3/8 x 14 1/4" thick beveled edges, not bad at all!

Thanks again!

hey no problem, glad i could help.

i was actually referred there by one of the guys at Lowes. Lowes only cuts picture frame glass, 1/8" thick, and can't do specialized cuts like beveled edges, so he advised me to check out Community Glass. luckily they are right down the street from me too.

I used Lowes glass, hence my cut fingers and busted sump :/ The first time I even tapped a baffle while the sump was filled it broke.

Lowes cut all 4 pieces of my glass the wrong size the first time as well. Maybe there should be a sticky of reasons not to buy glass from lowes! :)
