The Silence and the new tank

That cube looks sweet Don. The all in one nano just keeps getting better and better. All that time you used to spend on weekends doing water changes and other maintenance can now be spent golfing!!! The clams look great, I thought damage to the foot of a clam meant certain death?? But hey what do I know?? Hope you enjoy!

You have to cut the "strings" of the foot they use to attach to the rockwork without pulling the foot out of the bottom of the clam... When you pull out the foot without cutting it first, more often than not, damage will be done internally to the demise of your clam... :(

Thanks Randy - Your full of such useless OOPSS! I meant usefull info!! I always wondered about that...and now I know. Thanks again man.

No prob... How're the kids??? New one still keeping you up at night??? Or has he/she learned to sleep through till morning???

Sorry Don... :uzi:

She is doing fine and yes she is sleeping through the night now. Well for the most part atleast. Thanks for asking.

Sorry for the high-jack Don. But it wouldn't be an ETRC thread without a good high-jack

how old is she? i have one on the way. due in june... looking forward to having the baby, but not looking forward to only 2 hours of sleep in a row

Congrats skwirl!!!!!

Besides, new tank ~ new child... Theres a correlation there somewhere...

:uzi: No need for apologies, it was far past "open season" for hijacks.

You poor souls with babies coming. Staying up all hours for your babies attention is one of the best parts of it: they love you, they want you to pay attn to them, they trust you, and for the most part every new thing they do is amazing. It all goes downhill from there and you start crossing off all those things the older they get.

back to the tank, I figured out that only the 50/50 bulb was working and I thought that was the moonlight phase. Lighting is now cool, just 2 blue leds giving off a very slight light. Now that I have the other light working everything is really happy, including me.

back to the kids, on the positive side, one day they may make you a grandparent which is the best thing in life.

Ahhh. Two consecutive hours of sleep. Am I dreaming (no chance to reach REM:D). I don't even have kids (just adding to the hi jack:D).

no hijacks allowed from non-etrc and non-kid experienced. Go to bed and tell "mama" you've been a bad boy and you need a spanking. You might find yourself in new shoes in 9 months if you handle it correctly.

Papaw's have more imagination than back, You aint no spring chicken so I offer this advise with a full back disclaimer.

Oh, where were we agin?

Awww. Do I hafta;)? Actually, part of our reason for moving to Montgomery (if I ever get a freakin job offer) was to be closer to her family to have built in child care so we can get started:D.

LMAO!!! You're too funny Don... Glad Gary knows how to take you... :)

today was the first top off needed. Wife came home to find bubbles everywhere and called me at work. I told her to get a plastic dixie cup off the fridge and put 2 cups ro/di from the salt bucket that's in the laundry room into the tank. That solved it! If she had to manually top off the 300 it would have been "climb under the tank, find the wire/plug that goes to the pump that's in the left blue tub, plug that in and keep an eye on the level in the sump, when it reaches the top mark (duct tape) on the sump unplug the pump. Make sure hands are dry!" and she'd have said "No, you do it when you get home"

I used play sand from Lowes for the substrate (wish I'd have known about the pool filter sand a couple weeks ago). I have a cyano-bloom starting on the sand. I was hoping that would not happen... I used some chemi-clean stuff on my 55 and I heard someone else (Jeoff) just used it too with sucess. I may try that if it gets bad. I dont have a fuge to rid the excess phosphates the sand is probably giving off. Tanks's not designed for one but I may re-design it for phos control and pod factory.

What is special about pool filter sand? I have been thinking about adding a RDSB for my tank but don't want to spend $100 on sand. Nice tank btw.

Unless you want a Deep Sand Bed, your sand selection is purely aestethic. Some plays sands have dirt mixed in, though, which would not be desireable. Personally, I'd sooner smash my tank than put any sand back in the main section again. :) And that DSB in my sump must be getting a little gamey now after 2 years of operation.

@KafudaFish: A DSB needs a particular grain size (at least according to Dr. Ron). You can get sieve data from the factory. What is an RDSB?

One of the components of play sand (besides dirt) that is less desired is Silica... It has something to do with cyano... And causing Algae blooms... Been a while since I've read up on it... But thats the jist of it... :) Silica sand = Cyano problems... Or at least a higher potential for algae blooms... Thats why most people go for the Aragonite sand... Hence the good old Vinegar test... Bubbles = good sand... ;)

The silica in play sand is as inert as the silica in your tank glass. It does not lend itself to algae blooms. The nutrients in play sand is what leads to algae blooms. I've previously had a deep sand band for two years with clean silica play sand and no algae problems. I had lots of worms and bugs and other life that makes such a sand bed active, too.

Aragonite buffers at about pH 7.6. That's where the Southdown sand keeps my braskish tank at work. It won't really help buffer your reef tank, though, except as a last resort when it is crashing.
