The Tessalata Eel

I need some info/experiences with this eel. How agreesive are they? Was thinking of purchasing one about 2 feet long for my 220. Read signature for tank mates. But iwas also thinking of adding a school of blue reef chromis. But nothin is set in stone......

I have no first hand experience with them but from what I have read both here and other places is they are one of the more aggressive eels. You might start to miss some of your tank inhabitants.

I think for a community tank, there are much better choices. I'd get an eel that is less aggressive and does not get as big.

I have a Brazilian dragon moray. It's somewhat aggressive, and out more than my zebra moray. This eel won't exceed 2-2.5 feet, and is not dangerous to larger fish. (The Singapore and bi-color angel may not be 100 percent safe.)

If you get a "pebble toothed" eel such as a snowflake or zebra morays, your fish will be safer.

There are many other good choices of smaller morays that are not as aggressive as a tesselata.

I think a 2 foot tess will eat almost all of your tankmates, maybe not the bluering, but I'm sure it will try! I'd get a different eel or give him his own tank. I wonder if a school of chromis would be ok with a tess eel though, since they are so small.

My BDM goes after tiny frozen mysis shrimp, so I wouldn't assume chromis would be safe with a Tesselata.

They get pretty massive, and can swallow anything small. I don't think you could keep them with anything not fairly large. Angel and damsels would be at risk, maybe some of the bigger ones.

A zebra moray will be completely safe. Mine doesn't come out that much unless it's hungry, but still, a super-nice species.
