The Tiniest Angel EVER.

Meet Tiny.

He is really really small.

I think he is a French Angel but the LFS was calling him a Black Angel.

(That's a dime next to him)

Thanks guys! I will be sure to keep you informed as he/she grows. There is blue on his/her anal fins. You just can't see it in the pic. But IDK angels since I've never even been able to have one in my tank so you guys decide.

Amazingly he is already the boss of the tank. When I put him in the clowns and cardinals came zooming up to him to possibly eat him but he stood his ground and basically told them all to eff off.

Feed it a lot! The metabolism of the little guys is very high and even at that size he would probably need a constant food source or something close to it. But I don't think it is the tiniest...

...this one might be close though:

Ha I'm just messin'! But yea that was one of the prolarvae of my C. argi when I was trying to raise them.

The tail and markings on the tip of the mouth are keys to identifying it as a grey or french, but I haven't seen one that small myself so who knows. Usually french juveniles will act as cleaners when they are tiny like that too! (As with all cleaners though should not be used to fight parasites.)

Yeah he shows no fear to my bigger little fish like the baby clowns and the actually quite large copper cardinal fish. He goes right up to them and checks them out as if he would go to clean them. So awesome! He might be a grey cause the end of his tail is clear but again I don't know angels.

from the tail, that looks like a juvenile french angel. french angel has a yellow band at the back of the caudal fin while gray angel does not. also, the third yellow stripe on the french angel angles towards the back but doesn't on gray.

i hope you have a really large tank for him when he grows up. if you're not aware already, french angel is one of the biggest large angels, reaching 15" both horizontally and vertically. they need a minimum of 96" x 30" footprint, approximately 300-400 gallons. they are also very fast growing, if not the fastest growing fish. mine grew pretty much an inch every 1.5 months. the growth slows down around 10", but even at 10" it's still a big fish.

I have a place arranged for him when he gets bigger. Unfortunately he will have to leave my tank long before he is full grown. But I do have arrangements for him later.

As for the ID I was reading that the tail of french angels is encircled by a yellow ring. Being that his tail is not encircled by a ring and is clear on the end half wouldn't that mean he isn't a french?

the yellow band at the very back of the caudal fin, coupled with the angled curvy third yellow stripe, tell me that it's more likely to be a french angel than gray. gray angel has a single short stripe at the beginning of the tail, not the end. it also has a relatively straight and not angled third stripe. i suspect that this fish could either be an abnormal juvenile french or a hybrid, but time will tell (pretty soon actually). you should know for sure in two months.

Not to hijack this thread, or cause a fuss, but I remember reading somewhere that it was illegal to collect French & Grey Angels that small. Is that a local or state law?
Of course, he might have been collected in some other part of the Carribean Sea..
