The Ultimate Aggressive Experiment

Sometimes a picture really is worth 1000 words.

That's an awesome pic... where did you find it? Seems like you had a smaller guy in a well grown tank?
After a couple weeks of searching RC I've found a couple community tanks with undulateds in them other than mine, but never one with two(!) undy's in the same tank. Wonder how it'll work out? I'm guessing you double the fish you double the chance of problems....

Random pic of my little beast and some of his friends:

They have been seperated by eggcrate for a couple of weeks and I removed it a couple of days ago. No fighting at all so far, but they are definitely aware of each other. As the smaller undy has grown it hides more and more. It wedges itself in that plastic log and there is no way it comes out unless it wants to. On the rare occasion they are both out there is no conflict.

That little log is the only reason I'm trying this, if things go sour the small trigger can always get away.

Never tried this combo.....done multiple tusks, and blue lines, clowns, queens, not undys! Keep up the thread.

I figure this will have one of three outcomes.

The smaller trigger never stops hiding, only coming out briefly and darting back to the log. That's how it's looking, and I don't really want to have that happen. I'll separate them for the sake of the smaller fish.

They begin to savagely fight and have to be separated for that reason.

This crazy idea works and they coexist.

The first time they saw each other the smaller undy turned a dark purple, I had never seen that color change before.

Oh wow, you're actually doing this!!!
I'm certainly curious how this experiment turns out...
and purple, that's one I haven't seen yet.

Maybe put a mirror on one side of the tank, it will confuse them.

The mirror and the eggcrate have been a staple for the last two weeks. I still don't trust them...I separate them when I'm not there to watch. But the bigger undy is strong and destructive and actually popped the eggcrate out of place and was patrolling the whole tank when I got home from work.

Some good news, the smaller undy came out of hiding and is actually more active than it has been for months. They are swimming around and chomping pellets right beside each other. I can't really believe it. Still watching closely because the larger trigger is displaying stress markings and could snap at any moment. She's a lot bigger and could do some serious damage.

I would love to get some video, but the small trigger is more afraid of me than the it's monster of a roommate and hides when I come in the room.

Yes, that is a relatively bare 55 gallon tank. Yes, that is crazy.

If I'm going to give this a chance, I need to see all aggression out in the open. No chasing behind rocks, no pinning to one side of the tank. No territories.

I'm way outside the box, but I'll be damned if they aren't getting along.

Never tried this combo.....done multiple tusks.....

I tried a Harliquin tusk and a broomtail at the same time.

World War 3. The broomtail had to be removed immed. He wouldnt have lasted more than a few minutes. They were similar sized fish and the Harliquin was previously established.

Awesome!! Hope it goes well. Glad to see your taking all the necessary measures to make sure the fish are safe

They've been eggcrate free for a few days now and everything is going great. They now cruise the tank together and sleep inches apart.

Not even a dirty look during feeding time.

Mixing tangs and angels is a nightmare compared to this, not at all what I expected.
