Do you have any link to how to quarantine especially an angelfish ? Any special precaution for angelfish in particular ? I really LOVE these fishes and I will do anything to be able to keep a pair. Do you think I can quarantine them together since I'm prevently treating them for flukes and internal parasites ?
Well I'm usually full of links, unfortunately I don't have anything good regarding QTing... but here is a great thread regarding nasty flukes: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1260067 Unfortunately all to common on all fish, especially angels (I say that becsause I've experienced them the most on angels - by far my favortie fish :D )

My QT is a 50 gal breeder, with an AquaClear HOB filter, heater, and a bunch of PVC to hide in. This is my "treatment" QT tank, where I treat incoming fish with Prazi, Copper and/or anything else necessary. I'll say that all angels should be treated with Prazi as they come in, along with Copper (there are a couple species known to not handle copper well, IME the multibarred angel is not one of them).

I also have a 40 gal breeder "settling QT tank," which is the same set up as above, but it has sand, LR and a light to grow algae. The sole reason for this tank is for a fish like the multibarred angelfish... many times they'll go around and just pick at the rock, walls and substrate for long periods (sometimes months) before taking prepared foods, so all the algae and sponge gives them something to feed on. These tanks should not be treated with any type of medication, but it allows you to introduce them into a stress free environment and monitor them closely.

To save yourself the headache of setting up both, you could just do the first one for treatment, and have rocks (with algae on it) on hand to offer the fish after copper treatments. I would not add this rock back into your reef - ever. For this purpose I've made "deals" with LFSs before where I'd take an algae laden rock home with me, offer it to the fish, bring it back and return to their FOWLR systems.

The biggest killer in QT tanks is Ammonia. Main reason is many of the medications we use kill off beneficial bacteria that we grow in the filter along with the fact that there is no LR and there is no LS. Another factor many people don't think about is you can set up a QT tank, cycle it and ensure your biological filtration has matured some, yet there is no bio-load on the tank/filter without animals... then we bring home a bunch of fish and toss 'em into QT instantly overloading the system. This is why many times you'll hear/read to QT one fish at a time. In your situation you should be fine attempting QTing a pair simutaneously. I've QT'd schools of anthias before without issues... I fed the tank for a about a week prior to their addition to "bulk up" the beneficial bacteria. Whenever I set up a QT I use water from my DT. During QT I change water daily for the most part (especially during treatments), and I change 75-100% of it. I always use water from my DT for the water change and discard the water from the QT. By always using your DT water you're (ideally) keeping parameters pretty darn close, so just before introducing into your DT, you can do a large water change on the QT and instantly move the fish from QT into your DT ensuring the fish has little stress during the transfer. These large water changes keep Ammonia and Nitrite at bay... the best filter on a QT tank is yourself ;) As a side note, I always run one of these "Seachem Ammonia Alert" to monitor Ammonia levels at a quick glance. They work great and will last about a year submerged, they've saved my ace and fish more than once ;) :http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...D&Product_Code=SEA-010&Category_Code=SeachemT

I you're willing and ready (which I have a feeling you are ;) ), go for it man!

BTW, those renderings are rediculous... upon first glance I thought you had taken delivery on your tank already! This is going to be an awesome system

Thanks Stunreefer !!!!

I think you just diagnose my problem without knowing it ! I looked at your thread and my copperband and clown have all the symptoms except that my copperband is still eating like a pig. I will tried to dip them as soon as I arrived then armed myself with prazipro. If flukes come back then prazipro them.

I'm so relieve I cannot explain it hahaha

I already an hospital tank running before I had my first tank up but never had to quarantine a fish until today. Do you think it's a good idea to put a chromis or 2 in the quarantine to ensure it's running well before adding a couple of multibar for quarantine since they are pricey ??

Thank you ! :)

I would just lightly feed the tank a portion of flake food or a couple pellets in order to "feed" the bacteria. This will keep them going and reproducing as they would in the presence of fish, except they're breaking down "excess" food rather than fish poo - then you don't have to deal with any "excess" chromis ;)

If you wanted to add an animal, you could toss a couple hermits and/or snails in there assuming you haven't treated with copper. Then once the fish arrive if you treat with copper you can return the hermits/snails to your system.

Keep in mind that the beneficial bacteria is greatly effected (reduced) when treating, particularly with copper, which is why water changes are sooo important through the QT process. I've honestly QT'd fish multiple times without ANY filter whatsoever (just a heater and pump!). I'd feed twice a day and siphon up any excess foods (which equated to about 25% water change after every feeding), and every other day I'd change out 100% of the water with water from my DT. QTing can be, and is honestly, a PITA... but, it's not difficult, and your success rate will go up 10X + while adding fish especially tough ones like a multibarred angel.

Glad to help man, no worries!

Thanks Stunreefer :)

I already have all the quarantine tank set up, just that I didn't used it till now. Should have lol

I was thinking quarantine fish for 2 weeks for flukes and internal parasites, then if everything is fine after 2 weeks, move them to my frag tank to fatten them up for X numbers of time, then when they are fat enough, move them to my DT. Do you think is ok ?

I also lost my half black and one Cinnamon clown is MIA, dont know if he's hinding or dead somewhere in the tank :( But I was thinking about selling all my current fish went they will be cure and that I'm 100% sure they are flukes free.

So my new fish stock will be :
1 Sleeper Gold head Goby (already have)
1 copperband butterfly (already have)
2 Heniochus Diphreutes
2 Multifiaciatus Centropyge
2 Genicanthus X (not sure yet)
1 half black again (maybe if im not overcrowded)
+anthias, gobies, etc

Will I have any conflict ? Will this plan work out ?

Thank you

Sounds good to me

I believe you're planning on keeping coral right? If so, I would not recommend keeping Heniochus Diphreutes, as I'm yet to encounter one even remotely "reef safe."

Everything else looks good to me! Are you planning on making a top of some kind? I would highly recommend creating some kind of a top, at least keep it on when you're not at home... very easy way to save lives ;)

Thanks Stunreefer

I'm planning on keeping coral for sure :P I don't think I will by Heniocus Diphreutes since they are rarer (it's a word ?) than intermedius here in montreal ...

Not much of an update, I will order my tank, frag, sump and stand on thursday (pay day :P) I cannot way till thursday !!!

On the fish list, since my theme/goal is to have couple and symbiose, I will by a shrimp goby and pistol candy cane. Haven't decide yet which one but I really like the yasha for now.

I am thinking about putting a net of some sort but since I'm going rimless, I dont want it to conflict with the sleek effect or a rimless... I have to pick up 2 dj strip this week and beginning to design my frag tank stand so it can be a storage also.

Wonderful graphics there Rider ... one thing that might prove a PITA is the overflow comb, ensure that it is wide and deep enough to handle the flow.

Re the flow ideas ... I have both Tunze TS48 kit and a Vortech. The TS is 3 years old and every single 'blue box' has been replaced just after expiry of warranty. Also have a 6101 and its driver has also been replaced. The Vortec has been good except that it is infuriatingly noisey.

With the set up that you propose, push all of the water away from the weir and it will return in the perfect concept of movement of a body of water as opposed to a stream of water.

Cheers :)

Thanks Tonyf

Big night for me and my wallet, I'm happy !! My wallet is probably feeling empty hahaha

I order :
Display tank
Frag tank
Stand
Sump

My sump should be here in one or two weeks and the stand. I dont know for the frag tank and the display since in 2 weeks it's the construction vacation ... hopefully they will have time to built it before going to vacation and ship it when they return...

My sump is custom made by the owner of my LFS, he will had all the little extra that we could think of which will be really neat and clean :)

I'm so happy I cannot stop thinking about it.

I will probably begin to built my frag tank stand soon. So I will try to post something soon because this thread been pictureless for too long !!! lol

Thanks Ed and Austin :)

Usually, the time frame for manufacturing and delivering is 2-4 weeks but since "labor vacation" or work vacation is in two weeks and they will be close I don't know if they will have time to build the tank before going to vacation :S

I got a quote from AO and WAY higher without all the options so for equal tank, I think AO will be around 1000$ more to have the same finish and "options" and since it took them 5 weeks and 5-6 emails to only receive a quote I didn't like to have to "harass" them to receive a quote.

In the mean time, I have a lot to do before receiving the tank anyways

I have to clean my basement all take all the unused piece of furniture so I can keep the clean and minimalist look of my concept, clean garage so I can put my stuff somewhere, make room in my bedroom to bring my music studio somewhere in there.

I'm still a student so it's kind of messy, not like a teenager but still not a neat adult (I'm translating so I don't know if it's funny in english lol)

and after that I will begin my frag stand that I need to design since I'm not a carpenter at all and I want a clean finish and style that I don't know how to construct yet lol

I will posted some skecth this week-end so I can have some ideas going on about my frag stand :)

(sigh) have to go back to work now lol

Good luck cleaning out your room and basement :D To have to wait for the tank isn't so bad. You are forced to plan, prepare and clean everything now before the tank arrives -and that is only a good thing-. ;)
Will check back this weekend for the frag stand sketches.

I'm confused about how to construct my frag stand. here's a picture of the finished product. It will have an open back and will house 2 dj strip and food, etc. The door will be all the front piece so I can keep a slick look but I'm not sure how to achieve the structure with the offset. I was thinking building the frame smaller then add some spacer for my offset. Does someone have some design to propose ?

Here's the picture

Thanks

I worked 2 design for my frag stand. One using a steel stand and the other one wood. I'm waiting for the price on the steel stand and will see what the cost difference. Please leave me come comment and suggestions on theses two designs

Nothing much to updates

I pickup a small version of my skimmer for a really decent price, practically the price of the pump so I will try running both skimmer until I upgrade for something better in the future. Still waiting to see the new deltec. I will probably pickup either an ATB or new Deltec ...

I have to go pickup 2 dj strip and deciding on a way to build my frag stand and pick up the wood.

My thread definitely need some picture so I would try to clean my basement first lol and begin the stand as soon as possible. The tank should be here in august or at least the frag tank. For me it seems in a long time (2 weeks) but I'm sure once my frag tank stand built begin, 2 weeks will be flush :P

I would try taking some picture soon since 3 pages without picture is UNACCEPTABLe hahaha

This thread is still going on without any pictures :S Sorry guys but I should receive some picture of the tank tomorrow :)

Little update here, my sump will be 48x24x16, so it would be twice the capacity of the old layout. I couldn't afford a bigger sump at the time but JF from reefconcept.com worked something out for me so I could afford this sump :) I'm so happy because I was worried about the size being to small. I'm running a 66g on my 110g current setup and I was worried about running a 40g on a 175g setup. Now I'm releave and have to speed up on cleaning my basement. I'm procrastinating WAY TOO MUCH

I also found a new fish that I find interesting but didn't have time to find much info on it yet. It's the black backed wrasse, does any of you have info on this fish ?

here's a picture

Thanks and I promise some picture should be posted soon :P lol

We need pics!

Your stand plans look great, it will look nice and clean!

I'm not a wrasse-guy so I have no input on that fish, but if your seriously interested post a thread on it in the "Marine Fish Forum" here on RC and you'll get tons of replies
