I caught a glimpse of survivor to night, were they caught and ate a 14" , what looked to be a maxima? in palau? I thought that these were protect species?

Dude I think all this thing really sucks!
I dont see all those reality TV things, but one day few months back I switched on my TV and I see one urban guy on one of this survivor program , they put him in Mauritius or something.
Anyway, the guy was'nt able to catch a single fish, so this f&^%$ng Id*&t started eating clams 24/7.
Man, it aint funny, he started opening clams in front of the camera I thought like going out there!
And I'm like in front of TV with my friends.....here goes 200 bucks....hmmm here's another 100 bucks.....hmmm that a nice color....that's like 300.

I recently saw a TV program that discussed giant clams. A large part of the problem, is that the native people in areas where the clams grow, eat them as a regular food staple. It showed piles of huge shells as big as a house!!

AHK!!! I was freaking out too!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wished i had one of those bricks to throw at my TV!

wonder if they are going to get slaped with a fine???

looked like a derasa or gigas to me,you can get clams at a sushi bar here, more then half the clams from hatchery's go's to the food trade

Yeah, but they're not as nice as the Blue Maxima I saw this dude eating on that kinda survivor program few months back.
Thinking about it, this moron was eating clams cause he couldnt get any fish, so they showed how he opened many clams,(later he learned how to catch octopus), each clam was a full size Max, all he collected from the same area.
Just cause of this childlish program, that area can be doomed, at least for few years, and depends if there'll be other impacts on the clam population.

I'm diving quite often in Thiland, and there , in some areas, the clams populations is close to zero.
The memory of clams are the shelles all over the bungalow camps as ash tray and as graden decoration.

I've been to one island , in a fisherman village, I saw hundreds if not thousands clam shells in the shallow waters in an area where they dock their long tail boats.
Apparently, the fisherman eats the clam raw, and throw the remainings in that area.

I was snorkeling for around hundred meters, and all the sand was covered with clam shells.

Kinda sad, but they are the natives, and been doing it for years, but combined with the polution, increase of human population that have two affects, one are the tourists who impact by increase of polution (for example all the showers goes to...the ocean) and by that, if there are many tourists, there will be many jobs hence many Thai people,(more than originally) who just loves clams.
So all this just dont let the clam population in some areas to recover.
As I said, in some areas you cant see Clams, while my Thai friends says that till 10 years ago, you could have see clams all around the island.

Back to the moron who eats clam to "survive" , after diving in the oceans and appreciate all that beauty for many years, I feel it's not smart (sorry cant use other words) to make such a program.

Not sure if any of you have seen the issue of CORAL magazine that is mostly about clams but you would be shocked. The clams in these areas are not protected but there shells are. hundreds if not thousands of clams are eaten daily in these areas. The problem is they can't dispose of the shells so you can actually see how many and how big these clams actually were that are being consumed because they have what they call shell grave yards and there are tons and tons of shells. You guys would be shocked. They also show pictures from restaurants where there are tanks set up and you can actually pick which clam you would like to eat. Looked like in the picture that they were all in the 6-10 inch range. If you guys get a chance check out that issue of CORAL.

Nothing different then us eating oysters in Louisiana or conchs in the Bahamas.A friend of mine was stationed with his wife who was military in Japan. And he became a dive instructor and said that the clams where all over the ocean bottom. They ate them as well and said the smaller ones where pretty good.

I had Giant Clam at a Sushi restaurant the other day. It was actually pretty good. I'm not sure what type or where it came from though.

Many pets are peoples food. Many of us have pets dogs, and some people like a tasty bowl fido soup. Its all about where you are and the traditions of the area. For survivor, If I had no food I have no problem eating a multi colored teardrop. But I would rather have it for my tank of course.

I have heard that all of the aqua cultured clams shipped here (England) are actually shipped as food and the marine aquarium trade add their mark up before selling to us hobbyists.
