Thick Branches on Acros/Stags

I notice that in many SPS tanks, Acros tend to have "thick" branches. I have some frags that are growing and the ones that are in more direct flow get a little thicker branches. I have some Acros that are very small frags and are growing well. It seems hard to believe though that they it will get that large "thick" branching that I see soo often in tanks. One frag I can think of is my Green SLimer. It is branching out but branches are not as thick as others I have seen. Does this take awhile? How does flow effect them?

Some corals are more prone to developing larger branches than others. That said, more water flow is required to bring about thicker branches.

I have noticed that with direct high flow some will grow a large base then start to grow the larger branches. but it depends on the type of sps.

What are your Cal and Alk levels. I noticed once I started keeping my Alk above 10DKh and calcium above 420 a lot of my the branches on my acros started to get thicker.

Hi thanks guys for the imput.....

I actually dose a 2 park Calcium/Alk supplement called OceansBlend. I havent checked my calcium recently but I can say all my corals are growing. The last time I checked it was in the mid 300's. I have a lot of flow in the top part of the tank, kinda pointing down towards all the corals. I have 3 maxi jet 1200's and 1 rio. They are all on my wavemaker Pro.

Here's a picture from a few months ago. It shows where the powerheads are. I am actually looking into getting one of those new Vortex pumps because # 1 they won't take up a ton of space in my tank like a tunze or SEIO would # 2 I can move them to whereever I want # 3 They use a magnet so they won't fall like the Maxijets can.

Here's a pic of the corals, closer up....They are still frag/small colonies, so I am wandering when they may still get that branchy look.....
