I saw it yesterday - it looked good! Looks a little more like a leucokranos to me.
I have seen a bunch at Reef Encounter over the years. You know it is named after the owner Mike there, right? He usually has a couple on hand. Take a spin up there, the color on the theillei is much more orange as opposed to peach. His always come from Philippines - the leuks usually come from PNG.

i thought that too at first, but i think it would be pretty rare for a leucokranos to have a white marking on the head that wraps completely around without any breaks. Their normal color patter is a cap on the top of the head and markings on both sides of the head but not connected. And also did u notice the white on the dorsal near the tail? I'm almost positive thats not a characteristic of leucokranos.

The fish at absolutely fish looks almost identical to this photo taken by Thiellei, the only difference is that its missing the middle patch of white, but the head and tail markings are near identical.

Actually, although the first leucokranos had caps, most the ones you see now have head bars connected to the caps. It is also very common for them to have white along the dorsal surface especially near the tail.
There are two main differences:
Location of collection: leucs come from PNG/Solomon Islands, Thiellei come from the Philippines
and Body Shape: Thiellei have a ocellaris shaped body, leucs have a chrysopterus or sandaracinos shaped body.

Thank you for that. The Thiellei we see looks so much like a mix between ocellaris and a skunk complex. I swear some of them look like misbar ocellaris you could almost draw three lines on them. They dont have a racing stripe really it always looks like three seperate bars.

well i just picked him up so he is acclimating now but i'll put some pics up as soon as he's settled into the tank. looking at him now i must say that he is just about identical to the picture of the Thiellei that i posted above except for the spot of white on the forsal fin. the head stripe and tail spot r just about identical. don't leucokranos tend to have a "racing stripe" mark on the top of their head like the one pictured that looks like a defined "cap" marking.

not necessarily. they are so variable since they are hybrids. I go by the shape of the fish mostly. I've seen 3 or 4 caps come in the past month, and took pictures of one nice one that had a full head bar.
make sure you keep your tank covered and let him settle without bright lights for a few days.

well we had some problem right from the get go. after acclimating i put him in the tank and my sargassum trigger immediately attacked it as if it were a feeder fish. not sure why because he's never done that to any other fish, but he did it today. So i quickly netted the clown and put him in a separate container within the tank so that the trigger couldn't get to him. The trigger seems to be paying the clown no attention now that it is in a closed off area, but i'm not sure what to do now. Do i try putting it back in tomorrow and see wut happens. Do i bring the trigger back to the store for credit because i can;t have him acting like this to any small fish i put in my tank. Or do i leave everything as it was and bring the clown back to the store. i guess i'll sleep on it tonight and c how i feel in the morning.
Oh by the way, the clown is eating for me already in his separate area. I guess thats a good thing because if it was really over stressed i don't think he would be taking food.

That trigger may not let up. How big is the clown and the trigger.
If you need any help im in jersey and will help any clownfish out in need.
It depends on you but you can be a rare clown keeper or a a trigger keeper.
Triggers can be very aggrresive and a clown like this needs to be in a low to no stress enviroment for proper acclimation.
If you decide to get rid of the clown i live 20 min from absolutely fish and would readily take it.
ive got an open tank.

the trigger is probably going to be the one to go. This is the first behavior like this i have seen from him. I have a small female flame wrasse (about the same size as the clown) in the tank with him and its been fine since day one. The trigger is just under 4" long, its still a juvi. Its a Sargassum which is a Xanthicthys, they aren't even supposed to eat other fish, i have no clue wut he is doing.

I think you are wrong in thinking that they do not eat little fish. These trigger are reef safe in the sense that they don't pick on corals and invertebrates (their mouth turn up thus they pick thing out of the water column). I can guess whether or not a trigger is reef safe by looking at it's mouth. Big fish eat little fish this is what you got.

Please do not return this fish to the store.
Sell or trade it to a local reefer. Most likely it will only cause more stress. You need to get it into a controlled enviroment. If you need any help im local to you and absoluletly fish.

well the trigger has found a new home in my 55g frag tank for now, where he has more than enough room for now since he is only about 3.5" this will be where he resides until i decide what to do with him. i released the clown into the main tank a little while ago and he is swimming around and seems to be doing ok. The other fish are completely ignoring him and he seems to be eyeing up the BTA already so hopefully he'll go in it and become more comfortable. Well enough talking here are the pics, sorry for the poor quality but he is moving like mad so its hard to get a good shot.
