Thing about getting a carpet anemone

I have been wanting one for a long time. especially sense I want a pair of onyx clowns. I know the blue one are almost impossible to keep but I found a dark blue and purple one on reef hot spot that really catches my eye. I know its a bad idea to have them shipped but Its pretty much impossible not to. Has anyone had any luck ordering them? any advice?

I've never bought an anemone online.....I'm sure there are a lot of quality online vendors out there but there are too many variables that could go wrong with buying one that way.

Personally I would rather see what I am getting first hand. I've seen them stress from moving them from one tank to another with a travel time of an hr between locations and then acclimation time. I can imagine what stuffing them in a bag and putting them in a plane might do to them.

I'd rather spend a few dollars more and end up with less risk getting one from my LFS.
At least then I can see what I am getting and with a small deposit usually most places will hold it for a while to make sure it is healthy. Then if it dies its on the stores head and you are not out $200 plus shipping.

Most places that sell them have no guarantee on them.

Just my opinion

These are the images of the ones they are looking at. I hope its allowed to cross link them like this. If not then I apologize and will edit or have my post modified/deleted.

List them as Family: Stichodactylidae but doesnt go into specific after that.

Also states
"While we do guarantee live arrival, due to the sensitive nature of this animal it is not covered by our live guarantee."

I'd guess its a haddoni :D

Would need to see the underside of the oral disc to be 100% sure, but they look like Gigs to me. They seem to ship worse then Haddonis, and are harder to care for/find a healthy one. I personally only keep Haddonis (( have 5 of them )) but if I was ever to attempt a Gig, I would prefer to get it from either a local reefer or from an LFS, so I could see it in person.

What do you see in the images that would make you say Gig instead of Haddoni?

I have read the descriptions of both in the "FIELD GUIDE TO ANEMONE FISHES AND THEIR HOST SEA ANEMONES" but I still have difficulty telling them apart.

@ Todd, I wanted to thank you for all the help you gave me with my Haddoni a few months ago. It was invaluable. He ended up picking a spot after I tweeked the flow a ton and I ended up having to shuffle the rock work a bit so he would gain ample light....he buried himself so deep to hide from the flow then no light was getting through but with a bit of feeding and some rock removal over his head he looks good.

On a different note then this would be a blue Haddoni correct?

yea thats the one in the picture above im interested in. the lfs around whre i live never get them in.if you could give me advice on what i should do or where i should get one at let me know. i know a few people who have gotten them off reef hot spot before and had good success

I personally purchased from Live Aquaria and my Haddoni is doing well, and once again, Todd was here to answer my questions and help ease my mind with information. LiveAquaria offers an alive arrive guarantee on their animals and ship quality livestock. If you happen to see something in the Divers Den which you like, even better, as these are individual specimens that are guaranteed eating and healthy.I'm not promoting killing livestock when a tank isn't ready, but it does give you peace of mind knowing you aren't throwing money in the can on an unhealthy invert.

It is sort of a feel thing -- been keeping Haddonis for 10+ years. But, the tentacles on the first pictures in this thread make me think Gig, whereas the ones in this quote are haddoni tentacles.

Have you kept anemones before? I would consider Gigs for experience reefers only. I personally would be wary of getting a shipped Gig.

What size tank, lights, flow?

yea I have multiple rbtas I have a 220 probably running around 350 gal of water. 400 watt 20k halides. 2 vortec and 2 tunzes 6108s thinks thats what there called. but im running an octo 250 for a skimmer i would rather get a Haddoni but i can only find them in green. I belive if i can get a healthy gig ill be able to keep it happy
