things in water

I don't have a picture....i know that would probably help. Anyways, my tank is fairly new.....about a month or so. my water was clear and everything was going great. I started to get a little green hair type algae along with some brownish powdery stuff. Anyways over the last couple days i have noticed that my water has what appear to be white stuff floating in it. At first i thought it was just microbubbles, but the more i look at it, it does not appear to be bubbles. There also appears to be a film on my surface with almost dust like stuff on it. I am working on fixing my flow and breaking up the surface, but i am just curious as to what are these white things. They do not appear to be animals or "pods", but i have no idea what those even look like.....it kind of looks like pieces of salt although i had no such problem before. Any help. My paramaters have been undetectable on with my test kits and I have been around 1.023-1.024

Real hard to say based on what you've mentioned. Do you add calcium? Precipitate maybe?

I had the same film on top until I got a skimmer.

do you have anything that is actively skimming the surface? If not you will naturally develop a protien film at the water's surface.

I do have a protein skimmer.....a bad one at that.....i am planning on setting up a 29 gal sump as soon as I can afford a return pump and overflow as I already have the tank etc. I will move the skimmer there and hopefully that will help the film. In the mean time i plan on redirecting my hydor pump so that it breaks up the surface of the water.

I did notice last night what appear to be pods swimming around near the glass of my tank after the lights were out....i guess that is a good sign.

Anyways i have no idea what the other white things are in my tank. I have not added anything to the water....other than salt.....however all of the salt was dissolved before it was added..... a mystery

One thing I've noticed is that I'm getting a lot of 'pod molts floating around. They molt just like crabs and shrimp, so it stands to reason you'd see some, but it surprised me when I realized what those things were.

With a tank this young it could just be a water born bacteria or algae bloom. If so, a UV sterilizer will clear that up right quick.
