things you bought that were useless

Okay so i thought i would have all the experts list the stupid things they bought when they first started that were just useless
I myself have a huge canister filter that is just a hunk of junk not knowing that a sump would have been less exspensive an way more efficient

Canister filter... not entirely useless, but a very expensive way to increase flow.

217 different PVC fittings that weren't quite the fitting I needed. That and the many gallons of gas used to go back and forth to the hardware store.

Cheap test kit. Waste... of... money.

Lot's of different fish foods that my fish don't even recognize as food. The stuff I make myself is cheaper, and the fish really like it. All you need a blender and a supply of fresh sea food.

Live sand. More money I could have used for just about anything else. Your tank will have plenty of bacteria in it if you just give it the time it needs to get going. A couple pieces of live rock will have more bacteria in it than all the bags of live sand you could fit in your tank. Waste of money... I did it... but wish I hadn't.

There should be a sister thread for things we bought and never regreted. Mop, buckets, cleaning cloth (for cars, but works on glass tanks too) are high on my list.

Maybe a thread for things we want to buy... I'd have an RO/DI unit and an autotopoff system.

I bought a 150' spool of 1/4" Loc-Lin thinking I could use what I needed and sell the rest and make a little money. Boy, was I wrong, I couldn't even hgive it way.

PC lighting... :( Slowly switching over to T5HO. Startup costs are about the same... but overall performance, maintenance, life and cost of operation are substantially lower.

Well, if you're wanting to give it away, I'll take 50' :lmao:

I'll second the canister filter, Rio pump and PC lights and add a Red Sea Merlin fluidized bed to the list.
Although it's now an effluent chamber for my calc reactor.

iodine test kit

phosphate test kit

pc lights

skilter

berlin skimmer

sand

swing arm hydrometer

bio balls

Oh yeah forgot to mention with my P.O.S canister filter i also recieved a uv steralizer with my used tank now they are exspensive and i was like wow im getting such a deal but further reserch says they need to be replaced every 6 months or so well lucky lucky me the darn thing is from 2000 so a cool 6 years old worthless pos so now with this so called salt water aquarium i just bought I have to sell it and start over newbie mistake 101!!! IMPULSE BUYING IS SO FUN

Purpose made aquarium cooling fan! They say they will cool the water by 3-4 degree C in a hour. They do not work as advertised and it's REALLY Loud. Computer cooling fans are far, far better for noise, airflow and their ability to cool the water.

Cheap pair of Aquarium Grabbers. Not even pistol grip. More like scissor action. The jaws would always cross over each other and get stuck.
The stupidest thing I ever did was use tap water with an additive thinking that would be ok.
