Thinking about raising sexy shrimp

I just bought two sexy shrimp for my 46 gallon bow tank. One is pregnant, and I want to raise her babies. I have alot of experience with raising baby peppermints so these shouldn't be a problem since their larval time is much much shorter than peppermints.

So I have a few questions. How long will a pregnant female be pregnant before she releases her eggs starting from the day she becomes pregnant? How long does it take the young to leave their larval stage? I think I read 19 days on a post by lisa p.

Here's the setup where I plan to raise them (same setup for when I was raising peppermints):
-2 gallon
-heater
-15 watt bulb
-will add an air stone once they leave their larval stage since circulation from airstones is too rough for the larvae.
-two baby brine shrimp cultures to be fed twice to three times daily. In the case when live baby brine isnt available, frozen will be used.
-and I will do partial water changes every 1-2 days from the main tank

So does that all sound good?

All replies are appreciated, would love to hear from you lisa p, I've read from your post, and it is so helpful. Thanks!

T. amboinensis are small and easy to keep in groups. If you get 7-9 individuals, you are almost certain to get at least one pair, unless your LFS is screwing with you.

What is the larval size difference though? Just because the larval stage is shorter doesn't mean the larvae themselves will be as large. Maybe you should look into setting up a rot culture just in case the bbs are too large for the sexy shrimp babies to accept. I haven't read anything about these guys, but that was the first thing I thought about.

Fishkid, I'm not sure I have a mated pair, the pregnant one bullies the male, so I guess this egg release of hers could be the only one since she hates that male. I might get another one since there's a bigger chance for a pair to appear, and they look so cool together. But does anyone know how long the female will hold her eggs?

are they fairly easy to raise? just as easy as clownfish? i might get a few for my 45g. how many can i keep in there?

I think they are easy to raise consideing they can be fed brine from day one and their larval stage is very short. But I'm not sure, we need a real sexy shrimp here.

And I remeber reading on one article that they are easier to raise than peps since their larval stage is much much shorter. As for how many for a 45, I have a 46, I plan to put atleast 10 plus the 2 I have already once I raise them because they are WAY too expensive for their size. But the main thing is nitrates or how much they add to the bioload.

Now I just want to be sure that mine is pregnant, and when she will actually release her eggs. Does Anybody KNOW?

Heres the females butt.

Sorry for the cheezy pic. Its head it to the right side. So is it pregnant?

sorry for all the questions but what exactly do i do if my shrimp lays eggs? or do they have live babies? do i put the babies in a net breeder or leave them in the tank? thanks for all the help!

I've been following this thread and am interested as well. Is there a link anywhere that someone could post that gives some basics about breeding sexy shrimp?

Look up lisa p or how to raise sexy shrimp on google and go to the link from reefcentral. Lisa ps has the best info on breeding them that I know of.

All shrimp hold their eggs in their butt like from my pic and release them at night. They are released as eggs, but the babies take up to 4 seconds to squirm out of their eggs and swim to any source of light. DON't leave them in the tanknor they won't last ten minutes in there if you have any fish. Plus all pumps, skimmers and filters should be off. And be ready to catch them in the morning or as soon they are released to ensure that most survive.
as for the breeders net, I would use a tank (no more than 5 gallons, I use two gal) I think it would be easier to observe from a tank than a net.

Yup, thats it, though it doesn't mention anything on when the eggs are released and how long they hold the eggs. I can't seem to find this info anywhere.

I think the egg release could be tonight

I think the egg release could be tonight

I have no idea if this is a sign, but my pregnant female is very bloated, and its spots are a tint of pink. But the biggest thing is, its eyes are almost completely red! I have no idea if this is a sign or not, I'll keep an eye on it tonight.

Here are some pics:

And heres where you could see its spots are a kind of pinkish tint. So what do you all think? Its a sudden change so I think it coudl be from its pregnancy, I will turn off my filters, skimmer and powerheads off incase she releases. I'm so excited:D

I think the red is an artifact of the light. Here are mine (R.I.P., sigh), a male mating and trying to defend his mate from another male. So, no way is she about to give birth. :) But, you see the color of the eyes.

Oh! No egg release tonight unfortunately. But I don't think the red eyes are from any lighting. From your pic, their eyes are a light clearish pink color, while mine are a solid dark red, so its not any lighting. and that ones the only one that has the redness of the eyes. I don't know though, I sent a private message to Lisap since she obviously has better things to do:rolleyes:

I'll check tonight again since I think it could be coming.
