Thinking of Ordering my First bit of Coral Soon

And I chose Mushrooms. For some reason I'm drawn to these type over anything else that I've seen. Right now my biggest issue is lighting though. I have only standard Fluorescent lighting and am in need of an upgrade. Any suggestions without going over a $150 limit.

My tank is a 29G BTW.

I don't really have any particular type of Mushroom that I'm interested in so a general answer would be appreciated.

Have you looked at any of the current orbit fixtures or if you have a canopy you can get a little retrofit kit to put the lights right in

check out a place like reefgeek.com and see what light you like the best- mushies will be fine under anything but imo look best under t5s or blue-er spectrum MH lights (20k)

T5s are probably more affordable though but i'm not sure with a tank that size

you should be able to find some PCs within that budget! look around at the classifieds! I love mushrooms and its great that they are fairly easy to keep.

Just to clarify, I'm referring to lighting, not which Coral I should pick out.

Thanks for the answers thus far.

You could do PC lights very inexpensively probably but I listed T5s so in case you wanted to pick other corals later on you could do some of the higher light ones. Forgot to say that my bad :)

You can have a very successful mushroom tank using PCs. But I agree with Chrisstie. Once you get started, chances are, you are going to want to try different corals. And you can do that with T5s.

PC, T5, ME-Hi, whatever you can get a good deal on.

I have 4x55w PC on my 29g and it's plenty of light for everything I've got in there (which, admittedly, isn't SPS), but 10w/g is a good amount, me thinks!

Oh, and I got the fixture w/ new bulbs for $70 on craigslist.com

:)

if you got a bit of a do it yourself spirit go to ahsupply.com they have some great prices on retrofit pc lighting that fit real nice on a 10 gallon. youd be surprised how much light you can get in there with minimal heat. there reflectors are real nice too, mirror reflectors. you can see yourself in them!! you can build your own canopy or they have some. i build my own and i love it.

Are there any in particular that I should avoid if I have a Lawnmower Blenny. I've read that some can stun fish that "Hop" around and eat them.
