This sucks.. Look

I agree - very depressing.

I worked on an Imax film a few years back called Coral Reef Adventure. One of the goals of the film was to study the bleaching trends of coral in the South Pacific. The idea was that we would survey certian reefs in Tahiti, Fiji and Australia; mark them with GPS tags; and then return 10 years later to see the progress (for better or worse).

One of the more interesting parts of the film was when we set up a SW tank and did a week-long time lapse shot of what coral looks like when it bleaches. We hired a LFS to set up a tank and we rigged the camera for the time lapse shot. We then slowly raised the temperature in the tank so that the coral would bleach. (I think it took about 6 days.) The shot is awesome/scary and really goes to great lengths to show what happens over the course of time with global warming.

Don't worry - we didn't fully bleach the coral. We partnered with someone at a university research station in Hawaii who was conducting a study about reviving bleached coral. We were told that they were able to revive that one piece of coral under a controlled situation. If only it were that easy to do on a global scale in the real ocean.

I really hope that the producers do go back and make a follow up film (in about 7 years) to see how things have changed in the South Pacific.

You don't know what you got 'till it's gone.

Our arrogance and stupidity is destroying the entire earth. In the not too distant future the only living corals might be only found in an aquarium.

How sad.......
