those with tangs 1+yr old, please note your tangs growth here

Our Zebrasoma desjardinii was a free to good home tang that has been in our care for 8 years. He was approx 2.5 to 3" when we got him with full adult coloration. He is now about 7.5" and is quite fat and happy. We have no idea how old he really is, but know he was kept in a very small tank before we adopted him. He is the largest fish in our tank and definitely the alpha, but thankfully he is a very laid back and peaceful tang.

We purchased a Purple Tang from Diver's Den about 2 years ago. It was 4.5" at the time and is not 5.5-6". It grew a lot initially, but has only gotten wider in the past year.

what are you feeding?

NLS, PE Mysis, Hikari and ON Angel Formula, Spirulina Flakes, Homemade Reef Blend(Shrimp, Scallops, Clam, Mussels, Silversides, Some sort of white fish I forgot, Cyclopeeze, 2 types of frozen plankton, Squid, Spirulina, Selcon, Vitachem, Zoecon, and a couple other things I am sure I'm forgetting.)

Looking at a couple pics now, I would say he was closer to 1.5" when I got him. He was at the store for a while before I got him and he came in at about an inch.

Sorry for the bad pic. This is after a few weeks of having him and he has grown a little bit.

I will have to get a picture of him now.

my Yellow Bellied Hippo has been in my care since he was a small one inch circle swimiing around... cute little guy...

It's now about 1.5 years later (give or take) and I'd say he's going on 7+ inches.. hes in my 180g and i feed pretty well... his yellow belly is maturing and phat.. :0

my PBT is same as when I got him, adult size, guessing 5 inches... he's a typical PBT... has had some minior ICK, but in 7 months, no issues...

You have any pics? My hippo is a yellow belly, but they sure don't show it when they are small.

sorry, no i do not.

He didn't develop his yellow belly until much later on... i'd say you could see hints at 6months and it was pretty obvious at 12months...

NORI is the secret to me seeing color with "mr large"... (biggest fish in my tank).

The two tangs that grew fastest 12-14 months were a hippo tang 1 inch to abou 5-6 inches and my sohal 3 inch to 7-8 inch bruiser. My other tangs were a yellow and pbt and they showed little growth.

WOW! That fish is stunning! I have never seen such a nice looking sailfin.

My Yellow Tang has been with me for 21 months and has grown from a Juvi size of about 2.5 " - about 5" in that time. My Saifin came in a little over 12 months ago at about 3" and has almost caught up to the Yellow Tang. They get along pretty well with the usual flare ups every now and then.

Prop frags, your Desjardini Tang is very beautiful. May you enjoy him for many more years.

My blue I got 2.75 years ago at 1" and it's 6" now.

My clown tang I got 2.25 years ago at 2.5" and it's 8" now

I have a lieutenant tang that was about 4" when I got him... about 1.5 years later he's probably 7" or a bit more and more than 1" thick. The guy can definitely eat!

Also have a naso tang that was 2.5-3" when I got it also about 1.5 years ago. It's probably just 5-6" now, much slower growing then the LT. Seemed to grow very slowly at small size and around 4" growth rate increased substantially. It's got much more girth now too.

Chocolate tang (A. pyroferus) has gone from 4" to 5" in the past year but it's MUCH fatter and its color is absolutely beautiful.

Purple Tang-19+ Years. Gone from maybe 3 1/2" to 4 1/2".
Striatus Bristletooth-19 Years. Gone from maybe 1 1/2" to 5".
Both in 500g tank.
