Thought I would see what y'all thought

I went to the LFS after cleaning up the tank and making sure all was well and saw a gold back trigger looking a little rough. So I bought him (LFS sold for only 50$) and he instantly hid and hasn't come out for feeding since yesterday I put him in the holding tank. How can I coax him to come out to eat?

Did he eat in the store?Never buy a fish unless you see him eat.He is stressed, you just have to wait.Keep the lights off.

Try some garlic flakes. That's suppose to encourage fish to start eating. Best of luck and I hope everything works out! Keep us posted.

Thanks for the responses. The little guy is hiding in the rocks but still can see him moving about. He was eating in the store. Im hoping he will come on out. I feed enriched flakes Mysis with selcon, brine and lastly nori.

It is on the market because people will buy it. If you buy it they will sell it.

I do find it interesting that people will read that something is good for fish, or see it in the LFS and the owner says its good and then they buy it. Someone tells them it is bad and they say prove it. Why never "prove" it's good?

That is rhetorical as I used to add garlic to my home made fish food.

I dont think the issue is garlic being toxic to fish. It is the amount of garlic used. Soaking flake food in garlic and feeding it to fish is equivalent to soaking loaves of bread into garlic and eating that for days. I am pretty sure it would cause similar symptoms in people if you ate that much.

Garlic is not really toxic to fish. If used too much it can cause organ damage in the fish. I don't use garlic everyday, but using it about once a week when I feed frozen. I usually use Vita-chem or Selcon.

I have proven that it works with very tough fish to get to eat (leopard wrasses and M.I.)

so that is all the proof I have ever needed.

I guess it might be like alcohol. If I drink a cocktail or two I get hungry and eat, but the alcohol is toxic and is bad for my liver. Just like garlic has been shown to be bad for the liver of fish.

That's kinda what I was thinking.

I would be better off without the alcohol and the fish would be better off without the garlic.

because everyone wants a quick fix and snake oil offers that. it amazes me that a hobby with such a deep foundation in the sciences is as susceptible to woo nonesense as the darker corners of the internet.

FWIW i've tried garlic to get fish eating, it has NEVER worked for me. i also explicitly avoid any food containing it, due to the reasons listed.

there's plenty of great information on why garlic doesn't help anything, and even more on why it might be bad. i have seen absolutely nothing that supports its touted benefits. just a bunch of anecdotal gobblety gook.

this is the same as when you fight with someone about ich "always being present". clearly it is not, there's demonstrable scientific proof of that fact, but no one cares what they truth is.
