Tank will be 96x32x28

1/2. Vs 3/4. Thoughts???

The cost is substantially more. The builder is top notch and feels 1/2 is sufficient

What's every ones thoughts???

my old 96x36x24 was built with 1/2" and it was fine for the five years i had it. it did have cross braces at each and and one in the middle however. if your tank is just going to be eurobraced, i would go with the 3/4" just for the piece of mind.

If you can really afford a tank 96"x32"x28" then you can afford 3/4" glass. Check prices with another builder to see is it really that much more for 3/4" or is your builder not familiar with the laminating process required and he's just trying to put you off it?

good points....

price wise we are talking 2700 vs 4300

on the bracing they were planning on euro and 2 braces across the center areas....

My tank is 96x24x24 and 1/2 glass. It's eurobraced 3in strip on the front and back and ends that are 1/2 thick. I have 2 center supports that are 8in wide and 1/2 as well. I bought the tank used and it needed to be resealed and when I started taking it apart I broke the front. I contacted a local tank builder to get the new glass and this is what he recommended I do. The tank had no eurobracing before just the center supports. The tank has no bowing and is fine. The pklace I bought the glass from also builds their tanks this size with 1/2 glass as well.

so the final dimensions will be

96x30x27

2700 1/2
4200 3/4

the 1/2 will have center braces..along with euro ...

the 3/4 will have only euro bracing...

i will be using 4 vortechs so a good amount of flow...

do i just bite the bullet and go 3/4 and sleep better???

I would go with the 1/2 inch. In the end everyone will be looking in your tank and not at the bracing. My 180 is euro braeced with 2 center braces made out of starfire glass, 1/2 inch. I don't notice any of it. I'm to busy looking at my corals.

my 240 is (96 x 24 x 24) is made of 1/2 in glass.
i do not have any wave motion or anything like that, so i am happy with 1/2
if your going with 4 vortechs and you think you will get a lot of back and forth motion and wave action, i would do the 3/4 mainly because you have more silicone holding the seams and there will be less stress.
if your vortechs are going to be on a simple flow pattern and just a softie tank, then 1/2 should be fine.

your almost doubling the price of the tank with 3/4 but your getting a lot more tank (weight) and security. the sad part is no one wants to sink more money up front, but later on they always wish they would have.........
i have never found anyone that wished they would have built a cheaper tank or thinner..
just my opinion.

i have front and back bracing with 4 cross braces. i like the multiple thinner bracing verses the 2 super wide ones.
but its your tank, and dont forget to start a build thread and keep us informed.

also, with a deeper tank, (front to back) i would look into bottom bracing. it is just added security and thats also where all the pressure is.

I would do 3/4 for peace of mind. I ordered my tank recently its 96x36x24 and was alot less than 4200 and from a very reputable tank maker(although I dont think they are a sponsor here). It is eurobraced without any center braces as I HATE them after have one on my 180.

i have a 96 x 36 x 36 and it's 3/4"glass. it also has euro bracing and cross braces. if you can do euro only, that would be my choice, if not, then minimize the cross braces. they are hard to work around and a PITA. seems like they are always in the way.
for a thousand bucks i'd go for the 3/4"... as mentioned above, if you can afford a tank that big then this small difference shouldn't matter, i'm thinking total cost and operating costs.

My 300 is built with 1/2 on the sides and 3/4 on the bottom, It was like moving a tank, I could not imagine the tank bulit with 3/4 all around.
