I think in larger numbers, they could be harmful. Just one or two shouldn't be an issue, though they can sting some corals. I have several acans which destroy any hydriods within reach of the sweeper tenticles. There dosent seem to be much information on the internet about them. The are carnivores, I fed a few just to see what the eat. Also, if your working in your aquarium while they are extended they will sting you. It's not too painful though.

I've been told that they can be bad in large numbers due to stinging, but I wouldn't be worried about "just a few." I had a bunch of them when I first setup but now I don't see any. I think they are common when starting up but usually reduce in number as the tank matures.

Tank has been up for a while and ive been supergluing them closed but found a big one that goes to the bottom of a rock and may be stinging my sps. But not sure it its that or something else. Tank is mainly sps and zoas. Some zoas dont seem to mind them but others close up and wont come out till I cover them up with glue.
