Thoughts On Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salt

I have never used it, but a LFS I recently stopped at swears by it and here's a few pics to show the results. Looks promising to me!

it takes a lot more than salt to get those kind of results, but for the record I just did my first water change using Tropic Marin Pro, we'll see what happens.

I wish my LFS carried SPS like that.

anyways, I've been using Tropic Marine Reef for a long time and I'm very happy w/ it. I mix it until SG is about 1.025, because at that SG I get a nice balance of Mg, Ca, and alk.

I loved it, but switched back to Red Sea Coral Pro.
The buffering and calcium is much better and i don't have to do as many water changes to keep my levels up.

i did a 20% water change. Was using IO before and the corals really didn't like the new salt. The only thing I measured was the salinity which I always do at 1.025

There must have been a huge difference. Some RTN, some bleached or slimed up. i switched right back.

Check your Alk and Mg. I opened a new bucket this weekend and had very low Alk (5.6) and Mg (1085) at 1.025sg, but fairly high Ca (475). All Salifert tests. However, maybe I screwed up my mixing, but I didn't think so. Upping the KH was easy but took a lot of supplement to bring the Mg up from 1085. My first bucket did not have this problem. I'm going to retest it this weekend on a smaller batch.

i hear changing salt when doing water changes can be very stressful on corals, so it might not be that tropic marin pro is bad. I've heard when you introduce new salt, you have to do it very slowly, and not with a new water change.

Do your normal water changes with your usual salt, but in between do like a gallon in the middle of the week for tropic marin, and then slowly increase that into a full water change.

I tried a bucket of TMPR and was not impressed. My parameters were nice and stable, but the tank just always looked bland. I had to clean the glass daily, and the rock just seemed to look dusty. I switched to another brand three weeks ago, and am beyond amazed at how much healthier the tank looks. The water us much clearer and the rock is really starting to color up. Oddly enough, my skimmate production seems to have come to a slow crawl.

I recently switched from TM Pro salt as well. I had low alk/mag issues that I blamed on my Ca reactor. After switching salt brands, I am adding less Ca, Mag, and Alk to maintain proper levels. Colors have brighten up as well, but I also just started using Rods food in the tank. I attributed it to that. I doubt I will buy another bucket of TMP salt though. Plus, I think it's more expensive. HTH

For the last two posters, what did you switch to? I am using the standard TM and am not impressed either. I am looking for another option.

Thanks,

RMR,

I sent you a PM. I don't want to be the one that turns this thread into the Great Salt Debate of October 2006. The poster asked my opinion on a particular salt, and I gave it to him.

I too am not impressed...i have been switching back and forth with TMPro and Reef Crystals for the past months and i think after this bucket i will stay with the Reef Crystals.

Best salt IMO. I hear it works best with a CA reactor.

Thats becuse it has low Ca and Alk.

Great marketing ploy. Take out the Ca and Alk, charge $20 more, and say its "engineered for those hobbiests with high end equipment"

I've been very happy with HW so far, check out my salt thread. I've got another case coming, repeatability is what I am after.....

Just switched over and on my 5th water change from IO. Pro reef is awesome. My levels stay more consistant and I never have to buff magnessium now. I was dosing 8 caps a week on IO. Pro reef is good stuff and I am sticking with it!!
