Thread jacked

Like all threads they seem to go in the wrong direction.
This club has turned into a back stabing sale forum.
Which as of now I could do without in my life.
From the outside looking in this is the last place I want to go if I was new to the hobby.
This was never a realy tight group and with all the people from the surounding areas, it is hard to get everyone as agroup for meets.
I am sorry for all the new guy's and girls that have just found this club and are new to the hobby and had read all the BS and the back stabbing that has gone on this past month or two.
I have met a great bunch of people on RC and if I never go back to this site I am sure that I would still see a lot of them. I would miss whatever meets you would have and also getting to meet new people.
I guess what I am trying to say is lets get back to what this site is all about and what we all come her for. For the good of the hobby and not to make a fast buck and to bite the hand that feeds you. At the end of the day we would not be where we are today without the help from everyone on the board.
I am sure that there is alot more out there that feel the same as I do, if not then I guess I need to move on.

Thanks,
Ade

i'm sensing some tension in the last couple of posted threads from various people....but am completely confused as to why its there....did i miss something?

I agree. I've only been on this thread for a couple months and it was maybe only one or two threads that seem to have gone downhill (and not really that bad compared to some threads I've read elsewhere on RC and other sites). Unless I missed something???

Ade I think from what I have read over the last couple months that it would be a great loss to the local community if you left this forum.

That said. I have been a bit disappointed with the lack of actual reef discussion in the week or so. I just figured it was a lull.

That was my point, I am not pionting any fingers. I am myself to blame somtimes and I am sorry. Just kind of makes me mad that there are so many nice tanks and people and we can't even get a meeting once a month. A bad day in work and nothing to do can cause an uproar.

I see it too a bit. I think it is the money that gets in the way (like in all aspects of life) If everyone was here to pass on information and know how, then there would be no worries. But it seems that the cost of stuff and other material aspects of the hobby cause friction for some?

As for the whole UA thing. I think this board is pretty tight and if your a store you have to pay to promote. I think that is how these folks make their money.

I just moved and will have a really cool place for a meet once the carpet gets put in....

I've meet most of you and you are all super nice folks. I just think that the Veil of the internet sometimes skews peoples preceprions of what is real and what is just dramaaaaaa. Most of us have familys and we come here to see what other local hobbiests are doing and if there is a better way for us to do our own set-ups. I just wish there was more of that.

i've been wondering if hosting our own site would help. that way people could talk more freely and we could have more effective moderation.

Eric was talking about that one time before and I thought that it would be a great. Then you would need someone to run it right?
You could have a classified, DIY (matt you could run that one) wanted ( I take that one), fish ,corals and invert section.

I'm sort of new here and have been to one meet. The people that I met at Sam's were so nice and very helpful. I enjoy this forum and learning from each of you. I have no idea what is going on with the drama and hope it stays that way. lol I wish I could make it to more meets but with 3 kids and Brian working alot of weekends it is hard for me to travel. I think a new site would be awesome for the club. It could be more personal and not have as many rules.

alrighty then, we need to come up with a domain name for it.

swvareef.com
swvareefs.com
swvareefclub.com
.org
...?

as long as we don't get big and use lots of bandwidth, the hosting should be about $5-$10 a month from what i've seen. the domain name will be under $10 a year, and the forum software is $160. all cheap enough i can cover it myself. i'd rather just pay for it myself than open the can of worms of dues and/or store sponsors.

i've been wanting to learn how to set one up anyway, so this is a good excuse. i ran a dial-in BBS back in the day, can't be too different.

well, we're just a tiny corner of va. we'd have to get richmond and tidewater onboard to claim that name (both of which are several times larger than we are). but then i think that would make it a bit bigger than any of us want. the whole point is to make a tiny little hole in the wall for us where we make our own rules. too many clubs would be too many cooks in the kitchen.

RLBCvaReef.org or CBRVAreefclub.org - just a thought??

RCoutcasts.net???????

Roanoke
Blacksburg
Christiansburg
Lynchburg

Anyone else we need to add in there????

HOC what are you up to man!! You still in town? What up with the 700? Is it still in the house? You have any pix of when that was all up and reefy?? Sorry to jack the Jack

I like short and to the piont myself, I'll help cover the cost and will not take no for an answer. Out of the list, I like swvareef.com
i do not have a problem with dues, if we didn't do dues we could do a free for selling on the site and I know you said you didn't want to go there but I think that store sponsors would be a good thing.

I like swvareef as well. I think this is a great idea and I'd be happy to help with the cost.
Another small forum I belong to just does a donation thing thats voluntary to help cover cost of the hosting/software. No requirements for dues at all, so that people who're broke or whatever can still join in.
Sounds like a great plan, let me know how I can help.
John

swvareef.com seems to work well. if you list each of the towns in the name, it would be a very long name. i mean you forgot all of giles ( narrows, pearisburg, pembroke) dublin, pulaski, radford to name a few.

something to keep in mind is how will new people know about this new club website?

guess you could see if they will let you put flyers up in UA.

threads redirecting RC members to another website will probably get canned pretty quickly.
