Yea, I'm grasping at straws here, but...
I've got a glass holes overflow box (internal box only) that I can't get rid of. It's attached to the tank with a threaded bulkhead. Would it be a terrible idea to thread another bulkhead (attached to an external box with herbie drains) into the existing bulkhead?
My assumption is that it would be difficult to get a good seal between the bulkheads.
