Tile fish

Anyone keeping these? I got one coming in Tues from DD. It was called a Red stripe Tile Fish. They look awesome from the pic.

I've had a modicum of success keeping Purple Tilefish, and have resigned myself that Flashing tiles are just too temperamental (for me) to keep long term. Tilefish are jumpers, so make sure that the tank is well covered. They need a hiding place in the sand, usually beneath a rock or in a small crevice or cave, and can be easily startled; so treat your new one gently.

I've had good success feeding PE Mysis, Krill, Plankton and other meaty foods. Mine have always preferred to feed mid-water, never from the surface and infrequently from the bottom.

3 flashing tilefish

3 flashing tilefish

These fish are very easily startled at first. I've also heard its best to have them in pairs if not larger groups.

When I got my first 2, they would be hidden in the rockwork (underneath the sand line) and wouldn't come out for the first couple days.

Eventually one would come out when I did feeding but it would still dart in and out. After another couple days the 2nd tilefish would join the first to eat.

After about 2 weeks, the first tilefish would roam the tank all the time, the 2nd would only come out during feeding.

By week 4 both tile fish were out and about and would roam the tank all the time. If anything they are probably the most confident fish in the tank now. I must say I enjoy watching these fish more than any of my others.

I just picked up a 3rd flashing tilefish yesterday and he is still hidden in the rockwork. (its funny, he is using the exact same hiding spot as the first 2 tilefish when they came into the tank.

Btw once the flashing tilefish got used to the tank I never see them flash. I believe this is a good sign that they are never stressed. The base blue color is amazing as is and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Btw congratz on the beautiful red striped tile fish. It is gorgeous!

Thanks for the replies. I do have the top of my tank covered with the screening. I'm keeping a lot of fairy wrasses so I know about jumpers. :) I thought the tile fish would be a jumper but wanted to hear from others on their experiences.

Thanks, I loved the colors on it. I wished I could have got a pair. Maybe they will offer another one later.

Wonderful fish. Other than losing 2 pink skunks and a flashing tilefish to jumping (I have fairies also and a covered tank but these guys are like bullets when they jump and can push the screen up) they acclimated within 1 or 2 days and ate like pigs. I saw the DD one but have always bought mine directly from online etailers (no WYSIWYG).

I have a purple that I have had for 8 months now. He is out and about all of the time. This is the first non-shy tilefish that I have had. I am going to add a few flashing or red stripe when my 240g is ready to go. AWESOME fish!
