Tile for spawning ocellaris

I would like to put a piece of tile for my clowns to lay their eggs. Is there a special tile? Can I just use a regular kitchen tile? A piece of terra cotta? Any particular shape or size?

Also, what's the best way to attach the tile? Can I just glue it like a frag? Im' just concern that prying it out might be crack the tile. TIA.

Ceramic kitchen tile is fine. I wouldn't glue it to anything, find a way to prop it up securely. The purpose of the tile is for easy removal of eggs to a larval tank, gluing it would be counterproductive to this goal.

Here are some fairly old pictures from when I used some tile.

GSM pair, the tile was just placed against a rock -- close to where they first spawned.

Male Clarkii checking out the eggs. This tile was against a rock, but fell --- didn't bother them at all.

With all my spawning fish(the damsels too)I use a small 6 inch by 6 inch tile from my bathroom project 2 years ago.The good thing is when you take the tile and place another one in,the fish seem to not notice the new tile as both tiles look the same,so they spawn again(normally)here they did the last time...I think that makes scence?

Does putting a tile in encourage spawning or does it just give them a place to lay their eggs? The rock my female clown picked and often cleans is removable and it is right by their anemone...s...anemones... So should I just let them use that or should I put a tile in?

Tiles dont induce anything. They simply give them a place to lay their eggs. Its easier to remove a small 6" by 6" tile than a 2 to 5 pound rock.It also helps eliminate any damage of the eggs. But yo ucan still damage the eggs but its less likely with th etile.

The rock my female chose is only about 4"x4" and weighs less than 1/2 lbs. It can easily be removed. I think if they were to lay eggs on it, right before the eggs hatched, I would lower a small bowl into the tank and put the rock into the bowl, then lift out the bowl so the eggs aren't damaged. :mixed:

I've used tumbled marble and the standard ceramic tiles for quite some time. I find that if you include a vertical surface such as a tile or flower pot, the clowns seem to take to it before horizontal surfaces. If your unlucky, the female will start laying on the tank glass when you take a break from collecting eggs. My advice is to leave the tile in place regardless if your collecting eggs or not to maintain that favorite spot.
