Time of day to move from QT to DT?

When's the best time to move a fish from the QT to the DT? Early morning or at lights out?

No fish currently in display tank.

In my opinion lights out is the best. After all fish have gone to their sleeping spots. This way it will give the new addition some time to adjust. The longer the lights out the better. I add mine at night after the lights have been off for a little bit. Or I turn the lights off early the night I am putting the new fish in.

i would prefer at night, problem though is I have a carpet anenome, and so the new fish needs to see it, I am thinking to maybe cover or block off the carpet, so that I can intro new fish at night.

Well, if the tank had fish in it, I would ALWAYS move new fish into it in the morning....and then WATCH for problems! Too many times, I've moved fish late in the day and then didn't have time to watch them properly, and couldn't intercede when problems erupted.

For an empy tank, I would STILL move the fish earlier in the day, to allow it "to get the lay of the land" before lights out....less chance of it bumping around at night, and less prone to jumping out.

I knew an aquarist who always fed fish minutes after moving them - I always waited until the next day "to allow the fish to become accustomed to the tank". He had generally better results, so I do that now myself.

Thats interesting Jay. In my expierience when adding a new fish with the lights on he/she is always checked out and or tormented by the fish in the tank. Its almost like here is a new guy lets show him who the boss is.....

Now when I add a fish in the dark most fish are already in there sleeping state and could care less who is in the tank. I figured it gave the new addition some time to settle before getting bullied....

RBU1,

I understand what you are saying, but a tank has to be truly dark before the fish will actually sleep. Too many times, there are room lights on, etc., that allow the orginal fish slam the newly added one, yet it is dark enough that you can't see what is going on. I'd just rather have a problem show up when I'm there to intercede.
In really iffy cases, I'll float the new fish in a basket for a day or two....
