time to buy my skimmer question?

I am ready to buy my skimmer. I wonder - - - just because I can buy a deltec mc600 hob for my 50g tank - and probably will

why - or more exactly - what real benefit will a new or even any reefer get from using the deltec instead of a backpack or remora hob.

I am sure I would "gush" (I do like cool equipment) over the deltec, but would my tank, fishes, corals, inverts, algae, etc. be any better off or even know the difference?

If you're going to drop $400+ on a skimmer, get yourself a sump. The AP600 is a much better skimmer than the mc600, and isnt much more expensive. (Also look at H&S model, which is nicer, and cheaper)

Yes, you're tank will do better. The backpack is junk, and the remora is a very small step above junk at its best.

The MC600 is essentially what happens if you put a pump that pulls 16scfh on a CPR back pack. The AP600 on the other hand, is actually a well designed skimmer.

Here is the deal...everyone has opions...some people's come from hype and others just have a preferance...there is no "scentific" way to prove one skimmer company producers something better then the other...People talk really bad about the Coralife super skimmer, but 90% of the people that have them love them...so it is all really relative. All I can say is, just get one that is said to handle close to bouble your tank size, bigger is always better in this case.

I don't mind a bit spending the $475 for the deltec. I know the remora and backpack have iffy reputations even though lots of people love them. The same can be said for most other brands. I know that sump based skimmers are generally better and become an even bigger issue as the tank gets larger (remember mine is only a 50g). And if I were to get a small sump skimmer it would probably be a euroreef.

So again even though the remora or corallife or octopus etc. skimmers are kinda funky and cheap, will they do as good of a job? Will they keep the tank pristine and as healthy as the deltec? Thats all I want to know.

I had the deltec mce 600 its a good skimmer.I had it on my 150.Its small for a tank of that size but it worked well.I was also running a pacific coast skimmer in my sump.Its a good skimmer for the money.I have a remora sitting in my garage.Not worth the money it never skimmed that great.Deltec Rules had the mce 600 and switched to the ap 600 he noticed the skimmer picked up the nog much faster and he didn't even hook up the skimmer directly to the overflow.He has a 50 gal tank.He said the nog quality is the same but the skimmer performs much better and faster than the mce.You could buy the octopus its a good skimmer for the money.I just bought the tunze but I only installed it last night.

I had a EuroReef that I replaced with my Deltec. I can say my tank looks better now than it did with a bigger ER. It was hard for me to spend the money on another skimmer after having the ER, but I am glad I did now. Don't get me wrong I loved the ER, but it got to the point of overflowing all the time no matter what I did. My Deltec has overflowed once in the past 1.5 years or so that I have had it.
