Times Article

In doing research for our 1700g tank I was able to communicate with a few different people that have these mega tanks, and was able to see a few in person. There are some wicked cool 'rich people' tanks out there that really are works of art with carefully chosen and well cared for livestock, but the opposite is also true in some tanks I've seen where the bioload is way too high and the livestock ultimately suffer... 'if the sharks die we'll just get more!'.

When you think about it though, this is also representative of what a lot of people go through with smaller tanks. You can search through these message boards and finds lots of people creating absolute works of art from a relatively small budget, but there are also people putting multiple sand sifting stars into 40g tanks, Mandarin gobies into newly established tanks, etc and many people just say 'Well if they die we'll just get another fish'.

I communicated with the owner of a national sports team and though he is way too busy to do the majority of the maintenance on his tank he definately understands what is going on inside and enjoys rolling his sleeves up from time to time and getting a little wet. Just because he spends way more money and less time on his system than someone with a 54g corner tank doesn't mean he appreciates his any more or less.

I think tanks like this are a good thing for the hobby :-)

Excellent synopsis! I couldn't agree more!
